Recommendations for revascularisation in coronary artery disease patients

There have been several studies into the impact of completeness of revascularisation in recent years, yet few clear recommendations are available on the likely clinical outcomes. This topic is not formally addressed in either the European Society of Cardiology guidelines or those jointly issued by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology.

Phase 3 AVERROES trial reveals apixaban effective for atrial fibrillation patients unsuitable for warfarin

The phase 3 AVERROES (Apixaban Versus Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) to Prevent Strokes) trial, designed to show the superiority of apixaban over aspirin for the prevention of stroke or systemic embolism in high-risk atrial fibrillation patients unsuitable for treatment with a vitamin K antagonist (warfarin), was terminated early following a recommendation from the Data Monitoring Committee.

DePuy Orthopaedics sued over faulty hip-implant devices

Hip-implant surgery is commonplace, but a higher than expected number of failures began to surface in patients who had received an implanted device manufactured by a division of J&J. According to company statistics, about one in eight implant patients requires a painful and expensive second procedure called a "revision surgery."

Data monitoring committee recommends early termination following impressive results of AVERROES study

The data monitoring committee of the AVERROES study, seeing overwhelming evidence of the success of apixaban in the prevention of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who are unsuitable for the conventional treatment of warfarin, has recommended early termination of this study. The decision came after repeated review and careful consideration of all efficacy and safety data.

ESC/EACTS releases new Myocardial Revascularisation guidelines

Multivessel and left main disease have been long considered as mainstay indications for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG). This recommendation, however, has been strongly challenged on several occasions. The release of new Myocardial Revascularisation guidelines by ESC and the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons (EACTS) at the ESC Congress on Sunday 29 August is likely to shed new light on what has become a controversial topic.

Study: IV ibuprofen decreases pain, morphine use in pre and post-operative orthopedic surgery patients

Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. today announced the publication of new data supporting the safety and efficacy of Caldolor® (ibuprofen) Injection in pre and post-operative orthopedic surgery patients. The study, which was published in the August edition of the peer-reviewed journal Pain Medicine, concludes that IV ibuprofen significantly decreased pain and morphine use when compared with placebo.

Insurers embrace GOP with campaign cash; Palin drives abortion wedge

After being labeled as "villains" and enemies of reform by Democrats, health insurers are shifting their cash to the coffers of Republican candidates, giving GOP campaigns eight times as much money, Bloomberg reports. "WellPoint, along with Coventry Health Care Inc. and Humana Inc., gave Republican candidates $315,000 from May through July, according to U.S. Federal Election Commission records.
