Simbionix, USF Health receive BIRD Grant for development of Laparoscopic Hysterectomy simulation module

Patel sentence today

Dr. Jayant Patel, 60, a Bundaberg Base hospital surgeon has been found criminally negligent in his patient care. He was brought before the court on three accounts of manslaughter and causing grievous harm to another person. The incidents occurred during his tenure at the hospital as Director of Surgery between 2003 and 2005.

Khon Kaen University deploys Aruba's adaptive Wi-Fi networks and AirWave Wireless Management System

Aruba Networks, Inc., a global leader in distributed enterprise network solutions, today announced that Thailand's Khon Kaen University Faculty of Medicine has deployed its adaptive Wi-Fi networks and AirWave Wireless Management System to support X-Ray image archiving, healthcare and drug dosage record access, and Internet access to 2,000 staff members and 1,200 students. The new system replaces legacy Cisco and 3COM autonomous FAT access points, and was deployed by Aruba authorized partner World Information Technology Company.

2 new studies add to evidence of risks with diabetes drug Avandia as FDA prepares to debate it's safety

The Washington Post: Two new studies provide evidence "that the diabetes drug Avandia increases the risk of heart problems and strokes, renewing questions about the safety of the medication. ... The new research, released Monday, should prompt the Food and Drug Administration to remove the drug from the market, according to the researchers who led the analyses and several drug-safety advocates.

Herniated disk can cause low back and leg pain in adults

A literature review, led by Dr. Joseph Lee, published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS) suggests that a herniated disk is one of the most frequent causes of low back and leg pain in adults, but surgery is not for everyone. Between 60 and 80 percent of people will experience low back pain at some point in their lives.

AqueSys secures $35 million in Series C financing round

Study: Statins can reduce risk of prostate cancer recurrence after surgery

Men who use statins to lower their cholesterol are 30 percent less likely to see their prostate cancer come back after surgery compared to men who do not use the drugs, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center. Researchers also found that higher doses of the drugs were associated with lower risk of recurrence.
