Sticky gel composed of MPEG-pDHA may help seal wounds created by surgery: Study

A compound found in sunless tanning spray may help to heal wounds following surgery, according to new results published by plastic surgeons from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City and biomedical engineers at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where the novel compound was developed.

New research shows microdebrider technique has lowest overall complication rate

In a review of three different surgical techniques commonly used for tonsillectomy, the microdebrider technique (where a rotary cutting tool is used to shave tissue) had the lowest overall complication rate when compared to the other two techniques. The results are shown in new research published in the June 2010 issue of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

Hepatitis C investigations intensify as number of women infected by doctor rises

In recent news 12 women had been infected with the Hepatitis C virus allegedly from an anaesthetist Dr James Latham Peters, practising at an abortion clinic, Croydon Day Surgery. As the investigations continue the number of infected women has risen to 44.

Epilepsy surgery ends seizures and prevents further deterioration in memory

Patients with drug-resistant epilepsy run the risk of gradual deterioration in their cognitive abilities. Surgical treatment generally puts an end to seizures but can have a negative effect on memory. However, there is no further deterioration in memory, and some patients may even recover some of their memory capacity, reveals a thesis from the University of Gothenburg.

U.S. Department of Defense OTT initiative to replace scars and defects with healthy, functional tissues

A two-year, $12 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense Office of Technology Transition (OTT) will jumpstart human trials of three innovative research programs that aim to replace scars and defects with healthy, functional tissues, announced officials of the University of Pittsburgh and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine today at the Institute's Second Annual Open Session, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, Oakland.

Surgery more beneficial than drug therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia

A 17-year-long community study looking at symptoms of enlarged prostate in over 2,000 men age 40 to 79 years suggests that surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) offers more relief from incontinence and obstruction symptoms than treatment from drug-based therapy, according to a new study by researchers at Mayo Clinic.

A published report provides the final details on how two stroke-prevention procedures are safe and equally beneficial for men and women at risk for stroke, though their effectiveness does vary by age, say researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health in collaboration with other North American stroke investigators.

Major response to preoperative therapy increases survival in pancreatic cancer patients

Cancer of the pancreas--a glandular organ that lies behind the stomach and secretes vital enzymes and hormones--seldom is detected in early stages, making treatment difficult and survival statistics particularly grim. However, new research from Fox Chase Cancer Center finds that patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma whose tumors respond most to preoperative chemotherapy and radiation survive four times as long, on average, as those whose tumors respond least.

Women who undergo bilateral oophorectomy tend to have smaller tumors

More than half a million women in the United States undergo a hysterectomy each year and approximately half of those surgeries include removal of the ovaries. Researchers know that removing a woman's ovaries is associated with a reduction in the risk of developing breast cancer, but it has not been clear whether those cancers that do arise in these women differ from breast cancers in the general population.

Hebrew Union College honors Dr. Dean Lorich with 2010 Roger E. Joseph Prize for humanitarian efforts

Dr. Dean Lorich was honored with the 2010 Roger E. Joseph Prize by Hebrew Union College for his humanitarian efforts in treating victims of the recent Haiti earthquake and in Landstuhl, Germany treating soldiers injured in Iraq and in Afghanistan. The award recognizes individuals making lasting contributions to the causes of human rights.

Advances in cancer care help people diagnosed with cancer survive the disease

Ed Gardella, a police officer for 31 years, thought he was pretty tough. But then the 70-year old Worcester, Mass. resident was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. "You never forget that moment, where you were that moment you were told you have cancer," said Gardella. "I never thought I was a particularly brave man, nor did I think I was a coward. I was a police officer, a chief of police, but this disease brings everyone to their knees — no one is tougher than cancer."

Patients with stage IIIA NSCLC who receive lobectomy have increased overall survival: Research

There's debate about the best treatment approach for patients with certain stages of non-small cell lung cancer, which accounts for about 80 percent of all lung cancers. Patients with early stages of NSCLC are typically treated with surgery, but those with stage IIIA present more of a challenge because they are such a diverse group.

Sutter General performs first hip replacement with ROBODOC Surgical System after FDA clearance

Eighteen years ago, orthopedic surgeon William Bargar, M.D. made history when, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, he performed the first-ever hip replacement using a robotic device he developed called ROBODOC®, which improves precision in joint replacement surgery. Warren Roberts of Davis was among Dr. Bargar's first patients; in 1995, he underwent replacement of his left hip as a part of an FDA study using ROBODOC®.

US HIFU acquires Sonatherm 600 medical device from Misonix

USHIFU, LLC (US HIFU), a world leader in minimally invasive high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technologies and manufacturer of the Sonablate® 500 (Sonablate) medical device, announces the acquisition of certain Misonix HIFU assets and European distribution rights. In addition, through its transaction with Misonix, US HIFU acquires the Sonatherm® 600 medical device, a laparoscopic HIFU system used to ablate certain soft tissues.
