New combination chemotherapy may become clinical standard for metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer

For more than a decade, oncologists using cytotoxic chemotherapy to treat patients with advanced metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) have relied on the sequential use of single agent taxanes such as docetaxel and cabazitaxel. For example, docetaxel is commonly used as the "first-line" therapy, while cabazitaxel is used as the "second-line" therapy.

Over 700 Chinese patients with acute myeloid leukemia undergo Microtransplantation treatment

According to Dr. Huisheng Ai's team, founder of Microtransplantation regimen mainly for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, over 700 patients have undergone this therapy since its emergence in 2002. Based at MST International Clinic for Leukemia in the 307th Hospital of Chinese People's Liberation Army in Beijing, about 40 hematology centers covering all main hospitals in 32 provinces of mainland China have adopted Microtransplantation regimen.

Targeted agent pacritinib significantly reduces burden of advanced myelofibrosis in patients

Use of the targeted agent pacritinib significantly reduced the symptoms and burden of advanced myelofibrosis in patients, says a Mayo Clinic researcher who co-led PERSIST-1, the worldwide phase III clinical trial that tested the therapy. Specifically, pacritinib substantially reduced severe enlargement of the spleen, a typical feature of advanced myelofibrosis, in more than 20 percent of patients and alleviated debilitating side effects in more than 46 percent.

Daratumumab achieves 29.2% overall response rate in heavily pre-treated patients with multiple myeloma

Data from the international, multi-center, open-label, two-part, single-arm Phase 2 MMY2002 (SIRIUS) trial show treatment with single-agent daratumumab – an investigational, human anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody – achieved an overall response rate (ORR) of 29.2 percent (95% CI, 20.8-38.9), as assessed by an independent review committee, in heavily pre-treated patients with multiple myeloma.

Acupuncture-like TENS may be effective for treating radiation-induced xerostomia

Phase III results of Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 0537 indicate that acupuncture-like, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (ALTENS) may be equally effective as pilocarpine, the current prescription medication in a pill, to treat radiation-induced xerostomia (dry mouth), according to a study published in the June 1, 2015 issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics (Red Journal), the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

Roche’s immunotherapy MPDL3280A better than chemotherapy in improving overall survival in NSCLC patients

Data to be presented at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology suggest that the investigational immunotherapy MPDL3280A may double the likelihood of overall survival in the study period (HR=0.47), compared with docetaxel chemotherapy, in individuals with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who expressed the highest levels of PD-L1 (a receptor present on cancer cells).

New study shows stem cell treatments promote faster healing in primates with spinal cord injury

A new study appearing today in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine, designed to test how stem cell injections affect primates with spinal cord injury (SCI), showed the treatments significantly improved the animals’ motor function recovery and promoted faster healing, too. The researchers call their findings a step forward toward the goal of improving outcomes for humans with chronic SCI.
