Young onset age heightens Type 2 diabetes complication risks

Patients who develop Type 2 diabetes before the age of 40 years have higher complication risks at any given age than those who develop it later in life, research shows.

Concert Pharmaceuticals reports results from CTP-499 Phase 2 trial in patients with diabetic kidney disease

Concert Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced 48-week results of its Phase 2 clinical trial of CTP-499 in patients with diabetic kidney disease. CTP-499, when used in addition to the standard of care, is being developed to delay the progression of these patients to end-stage renal failure, which requires dialysis or kidney transplantation.

Prenatal risk factors linked with development of chronic kidney disease in children

Certain prenatal risk factors are associated with the development of chronic kidney disease in children, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN). Future studies should investigate whether modifying these factors could help protect children's kidney health.

Baxter reports topline results from BAX 111 Phase 3 trial for treatment of von Willebrand disease

Baxter International Inc. today announced topline results from a Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating the safety, efficacy and pharmacokinetics (PK) of BAX 111. BAX 111 is a recombinant von Willebrand factor (rVWF) under investigation for the treatment of bleeding episodes in patients with von Willebrand disease, the most common type of inherited bleeding disorder.

Lin28 gene may hold clues to regeneration of damaged kidneys in adults

Nearly one-third of cases of Wilms tumor, a pediatric cancer of the kidney, are linked to a gene called Lin28, according to research from Boston Children's Hospital. Mice engineered to express Lin28 in their kidneys developed Wilms tumor, which regressed when Lin28 was withdrawn, indicating that strategies aimed at blocking or deactivating the gene hold therapeutic promise for children with Wilms.
