FDA stops pain drug trial over safety concerns

Johnson & Johnson revealed Tuesday this week that a clinical trial of its experimental pain drug, fulranumab, has been stopped after the Food and Drug Administration expressed concerns that patients taking the drug could suffer increased joint damage.

Turns mortal heart attacks into non-mortal heart attacks -- NIH study

Three weeks of oral resveratrol or Longevinex- ingestion prior to an induced heart attack returned microRNA activity close to their pre-event levels in excised animal hearts. Among thousands of microRNA's studied, just six were attributed to exerting the majority of the gene-switching effects measured in the animal heart study - four microRNA optimally regulated by Longevinex- and two optimally by plain resveratrol.

Researchers identify new regulator that play a critical role in B cell development

A team at the Institut de recherches cliniques de Montr-al led by Dr. Tarik M-r-y, President and Scientific Director of the institute and Director of the Hematopoiesis and Cancer research unit, will be publishing an important breakthrough in tomorrow's issue of Immunity, a scientific journal from the Cell Press group. The researchers identified a new regulator playing a critical role in the development B cells, which produce antibodies.

BioMimetic granted Canadian notice of patent allowance covering rhPDGF-BB platform technology formulations

BioMimetic Therapeutics, Inc. announced today the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has allowed patent application No. 2,583,823 titled "Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) Compositions and Methods of Use Thereof". The new patent will remain in force until October 2025, during which time it will prohibit the marketing of similar or generic versions of the Company's Augment™ orthopedic product line and certain other rhPDGF-BB product formulations.

In a paper published in the journal PLoS One, the researchers demonstrated that culturing mouse embryonic stem cells on a soft gel rather than on a hard plate or dish keeps them in their pluripotent state, a ground state with the ability to become any type of tissue.

Abbott initiates ABT-806 Phase 1 trial in EGFR expressing tumors

Life Science Pharmaceuticals (LSP) announced today a milestone related to monoclonal-antibody (mAb) 806 licensed to Abbott. A Phase 1 trial with ABT-806, a humanized version of mAb 806 that selectively targets the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), has been initiated by Abbott in the U.S. The trial will assess the safety and pharmacokinetics of ABT-806 in patients with advanced solid tumors likely or known to express EGFR.

Syndax reports promising results from entinostat preclinical studies in breast cancer

Boehringer Ingelheim reports positive results from afatinib phase IIb/III LUX-Lung 1 trial in advanced NSCLC

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that new data from a subgroup analysis of the phase IIb/III LUX-Lung 1 trial show that afatinib (BIBW 2992) reached a four-fold extension (4.4 months vs. 1.0 month for placebo) in progression-free survival (PFS) in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients most likely to have an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation. The updated LUX-Lung 1 data will be presented at the Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology.

A new study shows that a combination of epigenetic therapy and molecular targeted therapy has promising results at combating advanced lung cancer according to research presented at the 2010 Chicago Multidisciplinary Symposium in Thoracic Oncology. Everolimus plus tamoxifen delays disease progression in HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer

A new study shows that the addition of everolimus (Afinitor® tablets) to the hormonal therapy tamoxifen in patients with hormone-receptor positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HR+/HER2-) metastatic breast cancer who have been previously treated with an aromatase inhibitor (AI) delays disease progression compared to tamoxifen alone. These results were presented today at the 33rd Annual CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in San Antonio, Texas.
