Hematology, also spelled haematology, is the branch of biology (physiology), pathology, clinical laboratory, internal medicine, and pediatrics that is concerned with the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and blood diseases. Hematology includes the study of etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood diseases.

Scientists look to create blood platelets from stem cells to study genetics of blood clotting disorders

Johns Hopkins scientists have launched a pioneering research program to create, for the first time, human platelet cells from stem cells in order to study inherited blood clotting abnormalities ranging from clots that cause heart attacks and stroke to bleeding disorders. The study is funded by a $9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as part of a nationwide initiative to examine how genetic variations cause heart, lung and blood diseases.

Celgene Corporation announced non-GAAP net income of $417 million, or non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.89, for the quarter ended June 30, 2011. Non-GAAP net income for the second quarter of 2010 was $323 million, or non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.69.

Inspiration presents OBI-1 pivotal study data on hemophilia at 23rd ISTH congress

Ipsen today announced that its partner Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. presented data from its clinical development program for OBI-1, an intravenous (IV) recombinant porcine factor VIII product (rpFVIII), intended for the treatment of bleeding in people with hemophilia A with inhibitors and in people with acquired hemophilia.

Puget Sound Blood Center, Seattle Children's inaugurate new on-site lab

Today, Seattle Children's and Puget Sound Blood Center opened a new blood laboratory to serve Children's patients exclusively. Located within Seattle Children's main campus and staffed by Puget Sound Blood Center employees 24 hours every day of the year, the facility will bring the lab closer to the patient.

Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, Biogen Idec announce data of rFVIIIFc Phase 1/2a trial for hemophilia A

Biogen Idec and Swedish Orphan Biovitrum today announced Phase 1/2a trial data showing that the companies' long-lasting fully-recombinant factor VIII Fc fusion protein (rFVIIIFc) was well tolerated and demonstrated an approximately 1.7-fold increase in half-life compared with Advate, a commercially-available factor VIII product, in 16 previously-treated patients with severe hemophilia A.

Study: IL-2 monotherapy not effective as maintenance therapy for acute myeloid leukemia
