FDA approves Acton’s AEROSPAN sNDA to treat asthma

Acton Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the sNDA (Supplemental New Drug Application) for AEROSPAN (flunisolide HFA, 80 mcg) Inhalation Aerosol, a hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) orally inhaled corticosteroid indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as a prophylactic therapy in adult and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

St. Jude Medical’s Eon family of neurostimulators receives European CE Mark approval

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, today announced it has received European CE Mark approval of its Eon family of neurostimulators for patients with intractable chronic migraine. Unveiled at the European Headache and Migraine Trust International Congress in London, this approval includes the Eon Mini neurostimulator, which is the world's smallest rechargeable neurostimulator with the longest-lasting battery in its class, and the Eon and EonC neurostimulators.

PNAS: Ras proteins bring tension to the phosphate chain

Proteins accelerate certain chemical reactions in cells by several orders of magnitude. The molecular mechanism by which the Ras protein accelerates the cleavage of the molecule GTP and thus slows cell growth is described by biophysicists at the Ruhr-Universit-t Bochum led by Prof. Dr. Klaus Gerwert in the Online Early Edition of the journal PNAS.

A study published in the October issue of Anesthesiology analyzed the effectiveness of ultrasound examination in the diagnosis and treatment of critical care patients. In particular, the study looked at the ability of ultrasound to detect hidden anomalies, prompt urgent changes in therapy, induce further testing or interventions, and confirm or modify diagnoses.

The p53 gene plays a key role in the prevention of cancer, by blocking cell growth and triggering programmed cell death or apoptosis. If, however, p53 has mutated and become defective, the cancer cells can acquire the ability to evade apoptosis and become more resistant to therapy.

Study examines association of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery with weight loss, diabetes mellitus

Severely obese patients who had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery had significant weight loss that was sustained for an average of 6 years after the surgery and also experienced frequent remission and lower incidence of diabetes, hypertension, and abnormal cholesterol levels, compared to participants who did not have the surgery, according to a study in the September 19 issue of JAMA, and theme issue on obesity.
