Biopsy is the removal of cells or tissues for examination by a pathologist. The pathologist may study the tissue under a microscope or perform other tests on the cells or tissue. There are many different types of biopsy procedures. The most common types include: (1) incisional biopsy, in which only a sample of tissue is removed; (2) excisional biopsy, in which an entire lump or suspicious area is removed; and (3) needle biopsy, in which a sample of tissue or fluid is removed with a needle. When a wide needle is used, the procedure is called a core biopsy. When a thin needle is used, the procedure is called a fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

GE Healthcare to present anti-[18F]FACBC phase 1 study results at Society of Nuclear Medicine annual meeting

GE Healthcare, a unit of the General Electric Company, today will present results of a phase 1 study of anti-[18F]FACBC at the 57th annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. The presentation closely follows the launch of the phase 2 clinical development program for anti-[18F]FACBC, which was initially discovered and developed by Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and was licensed to Nihon Medi-Physics Co., Ltd. (NMP) of Japan.

Microscopic image sensor to speed up detection of tumors

To diagnose cancer reliably, doctors usually conduct a biopsy including tissue ana-lysis - which is a time-consuming process. A microscopic image sensor, fitted in an endoscope, is being developed for in vivo cancer diagnosis, to speed up the detection of tumors.

Promising results of ABRAXANE for bladder cancer support efficacy of nab-driven chemotherapy

Abraxis BioScience, Inc. announced today that findings from a phase 1 randomized trial demonstrated that the nanoparticle albumin bound (nab®) driven chemotherapy, nab-paclitaxel (ABRAXANE® for Injectable Suspension; paclitaxel albumin protein-bound particles for injectable suspension) is well-tolerated and active in the second-line treatment of high-grade, non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer that has been refractory to standard intra-bladder infusion (intravesical) therapy.

BSGI effective for evaluating unclear mammographic or ultrasound findings

Researchers at the Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon presented data on the clinical use of Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), a molecular breast imaging technique, at the American Society of Breast Surgeons Annual meeting in Las Vegas in April: Breast Specific Gamma Imaging Used As An Adjunct to Mammography.

Urologists treating patients with suspicious ureteral or kidney lesions now have a tool to help them more effectively make diagnoses. Cook Medical has introduced the BIGopsy Backloading Biopsy Forceps, a device designed and engineered to obtain large renal or ureteral tissue specimens up to 4 mm3 for cancer diagnosis. The larger sample size helps produce biopsy results without the need for repeat tissue-sampling procedures associated with other biopsy devices.

Weill Cornell Medical College commences construction of 18-story, $650 million Medical Research Building

Weill Cornell Medical College today celebrated the start of construction on its new Medical Research Building, a state-of-the-art facility that will more than double the institution's existing research space. The 18-story, $650 million building is the centerpiece of Weill Cornell's $1.3 billion Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign, the country's largest for a medical college. Positive results from Phase 1 study evaluating IV administration of JX-594 to metastatic cancer patients

Jennerex, Inc., a clinical-stage cancer biotherapeutics company, today reported positive results from its Phase 1 dose escalation study evaluating the intravenous administration of JX-594 to patients with metastatic cancer. The data presented today demonstrated clear dose-related delivery to solid tumors, cancer-targeted replication and gene expression, and anti-cancer effects of JX-594 delivered IV.

AACE, AME and ETA jointly publish guidelines for diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules

Three of the world's most respected medical associations for the treatment of thyroid disease recently issued joint guidelines for the diagnosis and management of thyroid nodules. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Associazione Medici Endocrinologi and European Thyroid Association jointly published the guidelines online this week, and the executive summary will be published in the next issue of their respective journals.
