Obesity is a serious health problem affecting approximately one-third of the adult population in the United States. Obese individuals have an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. A recent study led by a University of Missouri researcher has identified the enzyme responsible for obesity-related hypertension -- a finding that could lead to new treatment options.

23andMe, Pfizer jointly launch Lupus Research Study

23andMe, Inc., the leading personal genetics company, today announced the launch of the Lupus Research Study in collaboration with Pfizer Inc. The companies aim to enroll 5,000 individuals with systemic lupus erythematosus, more commonly known as lupus, into the study to help better understand the genetics of lupus.

Bayer to further develop ISIS-FXIRx antisense investigational drug for thrombosis prevention

Bayer HealthCare has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. on ISIS-FXIRx, an antisense investigational drug in clinical development for the prevention of thrombosis. Under the agreement Bayer will further develop and commercialize ISIS-FXIRx in areas of high unmet medical need.

First new treatment authorised in a decade for advanced cervical cancer patients in the UK

The European Commission has licensed Avastin in combination with standard chemotherapy for the treatment of women with advanced cervical cancer. Until now, the treatment has been available ahead of licence to eligible patients in England via individual requests to the Cancer Drugs Fund (CDF).

Teen-LABS research study reveals musculoskeletal disease outcomes among obese adolescents

Outcomes regarding musculoskeletal disease among severely obese adolescents participating in the "Teen Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery" (Teen-LABS) study were published this week in JAMA Pediatrics. Teen-LABS is a multi-center clinical study funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health that is examining the safety and health effects of surgical weight loss procedures.

Molecular Health announced today it has been granted a patent in Europe entitled "Tissue Protective Erythropoietin Receptor". This latest patent supports Molecular Health's discovery that EPHB4 is a novel receptor for Erythropoietin (EPO), where EPHB4 binds to EPO and promotes tumor growth.
