Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. announced that they are working on the development of an infant bed cover using their patented Bend Sensor® design. The mattress will be used to monitor infants in the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (“SIDS”).

Regulus Therapeutics presents new data on oncology, immune disease and HCV therapeutic programs

Regulus Therapeutics Inc. today announced that new pre-clinical data from multiple therapeutic programs were presented at the “RNA Silencing: Mechanism, Biology and Application” Keystone Symposium held January 14 – 19, 2010 in Keystone, Colorado. Regulus and its collaborators presented data showing microRNA target regulation by anti-miRs, as well as data from therapeutic programs focused on oncology, immune disease and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

BARDA invites Aeolus Pharmaceuticals to submit proposal for development of AEOL 10150

Aeolus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that after review of the Company’s white paper on development of AEOL-10150 as a countermeasure for the lung effects of acute radiation syndrome, the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) Division of Chemical, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Countermeasures has informed the Company that, after careful analysis and consideration, it has invited Aeolus to submit a full proposal for a contract to develop AEOL 10150 from its current level of technical readiness to FDA approval.

NIH awards 12 research grants totaling $5 million for Tβ4 research

REGENERX BIOPHARMACEUTICALS, INC. announced today that National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded 12 research grants totaling over $5,000,000 for the study of Tβ4 in 2009/2010. Many of these grants will be going to collaborators with whom RegeneRx is working to understand its numerous biological activities and capabilities in medical indications, including the role of Tβ4 as an anti-inflammatory agent in tissue regeneration and its promotion of stem cell maturation.

KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi Pasteur partner in development of KB001 biologic for Pa infections

KaloBios Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced an agreement with Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of the sanofi-aventis Group, for the development and commercialization of KB001, an investigational new biologic for the treatment or prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) infections. Sanofi Pasteur will be responsible for the development and commercialization of KB001 and initially focus on hospital indications, including the prevention of Pa pneumonias in mechanically ventilated patients.

Immune cells causes inflammation in thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy

A cell type that causes significant scarring in lung disease appears to have a similar effect in Graves' disease, University of Michigan Health System researchers have found. The cells, called fibrocytes, are present at a higher than normal frequency in patients with Graves' disease, according to a new study, the first to associate fibrocytes with this autoimmune disease.

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recently published Sweat Testing: Sample Collection and Quantitative Chloride Analysis; Approved Guideline—Third Edition (C34-A3). This document addresses appropriate methods of collection and analysis, quality control, and the evaluation and reporting of sweat test results for the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.

Increased coffee consumption linked to reduced hepatic fibrosis

Researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) determined that patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) who consumed more than 308 mg of caffeine daily had milder liver fibrosis. The daily amount of caffeine intake found to be beneficial is equivalent to 2.25 cups of regular coffee.

NeoPharm submits IL13-PE38QQR IND for the treatment of IPF
