Study examines prevalence, severity and factors associated with chronic pain after breast cancer surgery

In a study that included more than 800 women who had undergone surgery for breast cancer, the majority reported some level of pain 12 months after surgery, and factors associated with pain included chronic preoperative pain, chemotherapy, preoperative depression and pain in the area to be operated, according to a study appearing in the January 1 issue of JAMA.

Manipulating epigenetic mechanism may promote cell death in pediatric brain cancer

Researchers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, the university hospital (Hospital de Cl-nicas de Porto Alegre, HCPA) and the Children's Cancer Institute (Instituto do C-ncer Infantil do Rio Grande do Sul, ICI-RS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, have shown that manipulating an epigenetic mechanism, which regulates gene expression, may promote cell death and favor maturation towards less malignant-prone phenotypes in pediatric brain cancer cell lines.

Infertility is consistently listed as one of the most distressing long-term side effects of cancer treatment for adolescents and young adults. Yet the leading National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers -- which should be leaders in fertility preservation -- aren't doing an adequate job of helping patients protect their fertility, reports a new Northwestern Medicine- study.

New study aims to identify breast cancer patients most susceptible to post-treatment fatigue

Although the prevalence and impact of cancer-related fatigue has been well established, very little is known about its predictors, mechanisms for development, and persistence post-treatment. A new research study at the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, in partnership with UCLA, is aimed at identifying breast cancer patients most susceptible to post-treatment fatigue by measuring biological, behavioral and social risk factors.

Nucletron installs first Esteya electronic brachytherapy system for skin cancer treatment

The first Esteya electronic brachytherapy system in the United States has been installed at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Esteya by Nucletron, an Elekta company, is a new approach for skin cancer treatment that relies on a small, high dose rate (HDR) X-ray source to apply high precision radiotherapy directly to the cancer site.

Early docetaxel drug with ADT increases survival of men with metastatic prostate cancer

Men with hormone-sensitive metastatic prostate cancer who received the chemotherapy drug docetaxel given at the start of standard hormone therapy lived longer than patients who received hormone therapy alone, according to early results from a National Institutes of Health-supported randomized controlled clinical trial.

New drug combination therapy effective for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer

Combining the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel and carboplatin with the HER2-targeted therapy trastuzumab was identified to be an ideal postsurgery treatment option for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, regardless of tumor size and whether or not disease has spread to the lymph nodes, according to results from the BETH study presented here at the 2013 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held Dec. 10-14.

Delivered by leading oncologists and palliative care doctors, the clinic is the first of its kind, specifically set up to offer a specialised cancer treatment by targeting the energy requirements of cancer cells using existing medicines that are already licensed for this purpose, have an acceptable safety profile and are low cost. ACoS Commission on Cancer, PHCQA partner to make PA cancer quality data available to public

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer has joined with the Pennsylvania Health Care Quality Alliance to make cancer quality data from participating Pennsylvania hospitals available to the public. The initiative, which is the first of its kind in the U.S., will include data from 72 percent (52 programs) of all CoC-accredited cancer programs in Pennsylvania.
