New nationwide initiative to conduct research on human immune system

A new nationwide research initiative has been launched to define changes in the human immune system's response to infection and vaccination using human rather than animal models, which could lead to better vaccines and other treatments. Baylor Research Institute (BRI), along with five other U.S.-based Human Immune Phenotyping Centers, will receive a total of $100 million over five years to conduct the research.

Pharmasset's PSI-938 phase I monotherapy trial shows positive result for HCV treatment

Pharmasset, Inc. reported positive preliminary results today from its phase I monotherapy trial of PSI-352938 for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV). PSI-938 is a guanosine nucleotide analog polymerase inhibitor in development for the treatment of chronic HCV infection.

Teck donates $2.5M to support emergency programs and services at St. Paul's Hospital

St. Paul's Hospital Foundation today announced that Teck Resources Limited donated $2.5 million to St. Paul's Hospital to complete the remaining funding for its recently renovated and redesigned emergency area. In recognition of Teck's major gift, the area will be named the Teck Emergency Centre. Furthermore, a fund to support research, academic productivity and the development of best practices at the hospital will be called the Teck Emergency Centre Innovation Fund.

Abbott is providing $180,000 in support to help address the recent cholera outbreak in central Haiti. This includes a $25,000 grant from the Abbott Fund to Partners In Health, and $155,000 in donated Abbott rehydration solutions and antibiotics.

Study finds passive safety engineered devices effective for NSI prevention

A landmark study of 22 million safety devices used in 61 French hospitals over a two-year period has confirmed the theory that passive, fully automatic safety devices offer significantly better protection against accidental needlestick injuries (NSIs) than early generation active safety technologies such as semi-automatic (push-button) devices or those with manually sliding shields or hinged caps.

Strativa Pharmaceuticals today announced that it has entered into an amended and restated license and supply agreement with Swedish Orphan Biovitrum (Sobi) covering the European development and commercialization rights of Strativa's Nascobal (cyanocobalamin) Vitamin B12 Nasal Spray. Strativa acquired the worldwide rights to Nascobal from QOL Medical, LLC in March 2009, which included a pre-existing agreement with Sobi.

Viral microRNA allows EBV to hide within cells and evade immune system

While most commonly associated with mononucleosis, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been linked to many diseases that affect people long after the initial infection takes place, including some forms of cancer. In the current issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, scientists at The Wistar Institute describe how viral microRNA - small segments of RNA that suppress the effects of gene activity - allows EBV to hide within cells and evade the immune system.
