Semen is an organic fluid, also known as seminal fluid, that usually contains spermatozoa. It is secreted by the gonads (sexual glands) and other sexual organs of male or hermaphroditic animals and can fertilize female ova. The process of discharge is called ejaculation.

A new study published in the International Journal of Andrology reveals that semen quality has significantly deteriorated during the last ten years in Finland, a country that previously was a region with high sperm counts.

Microbix first quarter revenues decrease 34% to $812,694

Microbix Biosystems Inc., a biotechnology company commercializing novel technologies for influenza vaccine manufacturing and livestock semen sexing, in addition to a core business of virology products, today reported financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2011. For the quarter ended December 31, 2010, Microbix reported revenues of $812,694, a 34% decrease from $1,226,538 for the same period in 2009.

Gene-transfer system may control mosquito-borne diseases without pesticides

Scientists have modeled a system that may be used to control mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, without the use of pesticides. In the proposed system, mosquitoes are engineered to carry two genes. The first gene causes males to transmit a toxin to females through their semen. The second gene, when expressed in females, makes them immune to this toxin.

Semen allergy to one's own

According to a study from Dutch researchers, some men are allergic to their own semen, developing a mysterious flu-like illness after they have an ejaculation. The condition, known as post-orgasmic illness syndrome or POIS, has been documented since 2002. It manifests as feverishness, runny nose, extreme fatigue and burning eyes, which can last for up to a week.

Repros receives IRB approval for Androxal Phase IIb study in secondary hypogonadism

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today reported it has received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval to commence the Phase IIb study of Androxal® in men with secondary hypogonadism. The Company has submitted the protocol for FDA comment and plans to begin enrolling subjects in January. Depending on the rate of subject enrollment, Repros hopes to have the study completed before the end of 2011.

Data from comparative REVLIMID study in multiple myeloma presented at 52nd ASH

Celgene International Sàrl today announced that data from a randomised clinical study conducted by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) were presented at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology comparing REVLIMID® (lenalidomide) plus low-dose dexamethasone (Rd) to lenalidomide plus high-dose dexamethasone (RD) in both younger and older newly-diagnosed multiple myeloma patients (NDMM).
