Researchers present more findings for microbicides, prep at M2010 conference

Researchers on Monday at the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh continued to present data on HIV prevention research, Reuters reports. The news service outlines several prevention methods being researched, including an intravaginal ring that over time releases two antiretrovirals - dapivirine and maraviroc - for up to a month, and a vaginal tablet that time-releases the antiretrovirals dapivirine and DS003 for up to 12 hours.

G7 aid delivers 'impressive results,' commitment falls short of 2005 pledge

According to an annual ONE report, which tracks progress on aid commitments made at the 2005 G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, the G7 - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the U.S. - is "on track to deliver 61 percent of their combined commitments to sub-Saharan Africa, or $13.7 billion of the $22.6 billion increase they promised," allAfrica.com reports.

Academic researchers say tour yielded 23 percent increase in patients who got best, cheapest drugs

Reuters reports that 150 academic researchers touring the U.S. to make recommendations on diuretics and best and cheapest practices for blood pressure medicine have reported a 23 percent increase in patients who get the recommended drugs, "twice the increase in the U.S. over the same period."

FDA warns on possible fracture risk with proton pump inhibitors use

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned consumers and health care professionals about a possible increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with high doses or long-term use of a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors. The product labeling will be changed to describe this possible increased risk.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee to mark up $3.5B Haiti reconstruction bill

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee Tuesday is expected to mark up a bill that would "authorize $3.5 billion in reconstruction funds for Haiti over five years" and would also require USAID "to submit a long-term reconstruction plan to Congress as well as mandate the president to appoint a senior policy coordinator for Haiti," The Hill reports (Bogardus, 5/23).

Federal lawyers ask judge to dismiss Virginia overhaul lawsuit

Obama administration officials asked a judge to dismiss Virginia's lawsuit challenging the new health reform law because the state does not have standing to sue over the requirement that individuals will be required to buy health insurance, The Washington Post reports. "Federal attorneys argued that individuals, not the state, are affected by the requirement. … Further, they wrote that the mandate causes no injury to the state and will not take effect until 2014, making the legal challenge not yet timely."
