Routine, jail-based HIV testing of inmates can successfully identify a substantial proportion of people unknowingly infected with HIV and could play a critical role in preventing the spread of the disease, according to a new report in this week's U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

LEAPS vaccine technology generates dendritic cells to stimulate immune system to fight viral illnesses

CEL-SCI Corporation and researchers at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) jointly announced today that a LEAPS-based vaccine (Ligand Epitope Antigen Presentation System) study has demonstrated the technology's potential using dendritic cells to stimulate the immune system to fight viral illnesses and other diseases.

Rare human antibodies protect mice from lethal strains of influenza

Scientists have identified a new, highly conserved molecular target on the influenza A virus and demonstrated that human antibodies against this target are protective in animal models of seasonal and highly-pathogenic avian influenza. The work was conducted by researchers at Theraclone Sciences, with collaborators at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo and Johns Hopkins University; and is reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

IAVI announces Japanese pledge of $10M for AIDS vaccine research and development

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) announced today that the Government of Japan pledged a US$10 million grant to support AIDS vaccine research and development over the next five years. The grant, which will be channeled through a newly established World Bank trust fund, is the first of its kind from the Japanese government to IAVI.

AHF rejects Obama trial balloon of $30M for nation's ADAP

AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the largest global AIDS organization, is rejecting a trial balloon floated by Obama Administration officials that suggests $30 million in additional funding could adequately help close a gaping $126 million hole in funding for the nation's AIDS Drug Assistance Program, the federal and state funded, state run network of assistance programs that supply lifesaving AIDS drugs to low-income Americans in need.

Early stages of kidney disease in type 1 diabetes can lead to increased risk of death, study author says

People with type 1 diabetes who have early and asymptomatic kidney damage, as indicated by small amounts of protein in the urine, are six times more likely to die compared to the general population, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Their study, being presented at the 70th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, also found that when kidneys remained normal over time, people with type 1 diabetes had no greater risk of death than their healthy counterparts.

FDA approves OraSure Technologies' OraQuick HCV Rapid Antibody Test

OraSure Technologies, Inc. announced today that its OraQuick Hepatitis C Rapid Antibody Test has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in detecting HCV antibodies in venous whole blood specimens, making it the first rapid HCV test approved by the FDA for use in the United States.

Minnesota AIDS Project awarded federal grant to support HIV prevention services for young gay, bisexual men

The Minnesota AIDS Project is pleased to announce that it has been notified that it will be awarded a federal grant for five years totaling over $1.5 million from the Centers for Disease Control targeting HIV prevention services for young gay and bisexual men in Minnesota. This segment of the community represents the fastest growing population of HIV infections in Minnesota with the total number of new cases in 2009 at the highest level since 1994. The Minnesota AIDS Project Board of Directors is focusing its efforts to reduce these numbers and is committed to using the funds to target these prevention services.

"The G8's failure to fully fund the historic aid commitments to Africa it made at the 2005 Gleneagles summit" puts the future success of the developing world at risk, the editorial states.

National HIV Testing Day is June 27, 2010. Like every day in a country where there are 56,000 new HIV infections a year, approximately 150 Americans will learn of their HIV infection on June 27th. So, here's the question -- what happens on June 28th, the day after National HIV Testing Day? What do medical providers do with these newly-identified HIV patients?
