G1 HCV patients having fast antiviral response to TVR with PEG-IFN and RBV can be cured in 24 weeks

24 weeks of treatment could be sufficient to cure between 93 and 100% of treatment-na-ve chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1 (G1) infected patients if they have a fast antiviral response to Telaprevir (TVR) with Peginterferon (PEG-IFN) and Ribavirin (RBV), according to new research presented today at the International Liver Congress 2010, the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna, Austria.

The Washington Post: "President Obama mandated Thursday that nearly all hospitals extend visitation rights to the partners of gay men and lesbians and respect patients' choices about who may make critical health-care decisions for them. ... The president directed the Department of Health and Human Services to prohibit discrimination in hospital visitation in a memo that was e-mailed to reporters ... while he was at a fundraiser in Miami."

Federal cancer research is 'at a breaking point,' IOM study finds

Bloomberg: "The government's cancer research network is 'approaching a state of crisis' as waste and inefficiency cause 40 percent of late-stage trials it funds to be abandoned before completion, according to a report released yesterday. The government-funded National Cancer Institute's clinical trials group isn't able to effectively study the benefits of new and current treatments, according to the analysis by the Institute of Medicine.

Prostate cancer patients having robotic prostatectomy enjoy significant benefits: Study

A new study of almost 700 patients from The Mount Sinai Medical Center shows that prostate cancer patients who had robotically assisted prostatectomy enjoyed significant benefits over patients who had a traditional open radical prostatectomy, including decreased surgical and recovery time, less blood loss during surgery and significantly shorter hospital stays.

Socioeconomic factors linked to rates and outcomes of stem cell transplantation for AML patients

The socioeconomic status of a country has long been considered a potentially significant factor in the availability of high-quality health-care interventions and even a determinant of long-term patient outcomes. A new study from the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation reports that in Europe, socioeconomic factors have a direct correlation to the rates and outcomes of stem cell transplantation for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
