New guideline presents recommendations for endoscopy units in prioritizing safety efforts

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has issued "Guidelines for safety in the gastrointestinal endoscopy unit." The purpose of this new guideline is to present recommendations for endoscopy units in implementing and prioritizing safety efforts and to provide an endoscopy-specific guideline by which to evaluate endoscopy units.

Brazilian study provides evidence to support effectiveness of Tecta in erosive GERD

Takeda Pharmaceuticals International GmbH announced today results showing pantoprazole magnesium 40 mg (Tecta) was as effective as esomeprazole 40 mg for achieving complete remission (defined as combined endoscopic healing and symptomatic relief) and the mucosal healing rate was high, whilst providing significantly higher symptom relief after 8 weeks.

Capsule endoscopy could identify presence of "occult" blood at very low levels

A tiny capsule that can carry out a chemical analysis of the contents of one's stomach could identify the presence of so-called "occult" blood at very low levels. The data is automatically broadcast to an external monitoring device for detection of early stage stomach cancer by one's physician. Details of the invention and initial trials are described in a forthcoming issue of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Technology.
