Paclitaxel is a drug used to treat breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma. It is also used together with another drug to treat non-small cell lung cancer. Paclitaxel is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. It blocks cell growth by stopping cell division and may kill cancer cells. It is a type of antimitotic agent. Also called Taxol.

The Paclitaxel compound is extracted from the Pacific yew tree Taxus brevifolia with antineoplastic activity. Paclitaxel binds to tubulin and inhibits the disassembly of microtubules, thereby resulting in the inhibition of cell division. This agent also induces apoptosis by binding to and blocking the function of the apoptosis inhibitor protein Bcl-2 (B-cell Leukemia 2). FDA approves Herceptin with chemotherapy for HER2-positive metastatic cancer

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Herceptin (trastuzumab) in combination with chemotherapy (cisplatin plus either capecitabine or 5-fluorouracil [5-FU]) for HER2-positive metastatic (cancer that has spread) cancer of the stomach or gastroesophageal junction, in men and women who have not received prior medicines for their metastatic disease.

Celgene Corporation today announced it has completed its acquisition of Abraxis BioScience, Inc. Combination therapy for ovarian cancer leads to greater toxicity

Adding topotecan to carboplatin plus paclitaxel, the standard treatment for ovarian cancer, does not improve progression-free survival in patients and leads to greater toxicity, according to a study published online October 11 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Final results from landmark trial confirm survival benefits of EGFR mutations in lung cancer

Mature results from a landmark Phase-III trial have confirmed that patients with EGFR mutation-positive advanced non-small cell lung cancer have better overall survival when treated with gefitinib or chemotherapy than patients whose tumors do not carry such mutations.

Research suggests bevacizumab delays progression in newly diagnosed ovarian cancer

Early results from a large Phase-III trial suggest that adding bevacizumab to chemotherapy as a treatment for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer reduces the risk of disease progression during the first year of treatment. At the 35th Congress of the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) in Milan, Italy, Dr Tim Perren from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, UK, reported findings from the international ICON7 trial, which included 1528 women with high-risk early or advanced stage epithelial ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer or Fallopian tube cancer.

Genta announces EMA Orphan Drug designation for tesetaxel

Genta Incorporated today announced that tesetaxel, the leading oral taxane in clinical development, has been designated as an Orphan Drug by the European Medicines Agency for gastric cancer. The drug has previously received Orphan Drug designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for both gastric cancer and melanoma, as well as Fast Track designation by FDA for gastric cancer.

Genta commences new tesetaxel Phase 2 clinical trial in advanced bladder cancer

Genta Incorporated today announced that the Company has initiated a new Phase 2 clinical trial of tesetaxel in patients with advanced bladder cancer. Use of CYPHER stent in diabetic patients can result in significant cost savings

New analysis presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics meeting (TCT 2010) in Washington, DC, indicates that the broad use of CYPHER Sirolimus-eluting coronary stent in patients with diabetes would result in substantial cost savings, as compared to the use of everolimus-eluting stents (EES), paclitaxel-eluting stents (PES), or zotarolimus-eluting stents (ZES).

TAXUS Element Stent has comparable levels of TLR and late loss in diabetic and non-diabetic patients

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced results from an analysis of 1,166 patients from its PERSEUS clinical program comparing the performance of the TAXUS® Element™ Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent System in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients. Results demonstrated that despite the known increased risk of restenosis for diabetics versus non-diabetics in patients undergoing coronary revascularization, the TAXUS Element Stent had comparable levels of target lesion revascularization (TLR) and late loss in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.
