Inviragen to present data on CHIKV vaccine at ASTMH meeting

Inviragen, a biotechnology company developing vaccines to protect against infectious diseases worldwide, together with investigators at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and the Division of Vector Borne Diseases (DVBD) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will make an oral presentation today at the annual American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) meeting on preclinical results of the Company's experimental chikungunya virus (CHIKV) vaccine.

Genentech announces Phase II RG7204 clinical study results for metastatic melanoma tumors

Genentech, Inc., a member of the Roche Group today announced results from a Phase II clinical study of RG7204 (PLX4032), an investigational first-in-class molecule designed to selectively inhibit a cancer-causing, mutated form of the BRAF protein found in approximately half of metastatic melanoma tumors.

Rising kidney disease a worry – home dialysis may solve some problems

Kidney Health Australia (KHA) has released a report that predicts that the number of people needing treatment for serious kidney disease will triple to 30,000 by 2020 and treating serious kidney disease will cost the health system $12 billion over the next decade. The report, by the George Institute for Global Health, also found the annual cost of providing dialysis treatment was just over $79,000 per patient. This was compared to just over $49,000 per person taking part in a program which delivers the treatment not in a hospital but in the patient’s home.

World's most clinically advanced dengue vaccine candidate enters first phase 3 clinical study

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis Group (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY), announced today that its dengue vaccine is in final stage of clinical development. Sanofi Pasteur's dengue vaccine, the world's most clinically advanced dengue vaccine candidate, entered its first phase 3 clinical study in Australia.

WHO names Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit as 'collaborating center'

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health today announced that its Department of International Health and International Injury Research Unit have been designated a "collaborating center" by the World Health Organization. The new WHO Collaborating Center for Injuries, Violence and Accident Prevention is only the third collaborating center in the United States to focus on injury prevention and joins a network of more than 800 WHO Collaborating Centers in more than 80 countries.

Scientists develop new method to analyze early detection of virus

The virus, called enterovirus 71, is closely related to poliovirus, and was first detected in California in the 1960s. Since then the virus has spread across Asia, affecting mostly children and some adults.
