Jefferson researchers progress in understanding mechanism behind systemic fibrotic disorder

Scientists from the Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine of Thomas Jefferson University are now several steps closer to understanding the mechanism behind a novel systemic fibrotic disorder that affects some patients with renal insufficiency who receive imaging contrast agents for MRI. Two of their studies on the disorder appear together in the November issue of the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases.

Amgen to review study results of ESA in chronic renal failure patients with FDA and CRDAC

Amgen will review the results from TREAT (the Trial to Reduce Cardiovascular Events with Aranesp® Therapy) and will discuss how these results inform the appropriate use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) for chronic renal failure (CRF) patients at today's meeting of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Cardiovascular and Renal Drugs Advisory Committee (CRDAC).

Studies examine risk factors for hospital readmission

In two studies published today in the Journal of Hospital Medicine, the risk factors for readmission to the hospital are examined based upon general medicine inpatients and those with at least two admissions in a six-month period. Alongside clinical factors such as having cancer, chronic diseases such as heart failure or lung disease, or being on high-risk medications, the studies identified other factors which increase the likelihood of a patient being readmitted which could help hospitalists focus in on these groups.

Pharmalink's Nefecon for IgA nephropathy receives FDA orphan drug designation

Pharmalink AB, a privately held Swedish pharmaceutical company, has received orphan drug designation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its product candidate Nefecon (PL-56) for patients with IgA nephropathy, also referred to as Berger's Disease. This program is presently in clinical development phase II.

FMCNA offers annual flu vaccine to patients and clinical staff

Beginning in mid-October, Fresenius Medical Care North America will offer all of its patients and clinical staff an annual flu vaccine, which protects against both seasonal flu and H1N1 this year. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cautions that it is likely that H1N1 will continue to spread along with seasonal viruses this flu season.

Researchers find no link between dialysis treatments and cardiac symptoms

U.S. Renal Care announces construction of new dialysis center in Oklahoma

U.S. Renal Care, Inc. (USRC), a leading privately-held provider of outpatient dialysis services, today announced it has started construction of a dialysis center in Grove, Oklahoma, the company's first in the state. The center, expected to open in December 2010, will bring the company's patient total to more than 5,500 served across 85 dialysis centers, home and specialty hospital dialysis programs and facilities. The expansion into northeast Oklahoma is part of USRC's commitment to serving rural communities without dialysis or nephrology services.

Large clinical trial does not confirm benefits of erythropoieitin for first ST-elevation myocardial infarction
