Paired exchange and incompatible kidney transplant program launched by UAB

Ann Marie Reynolds, a 32-year-old who has been in and out of hospitals fighting chronic kidney disease since she was a teenager, had a less than 1 percent chance of receiving a kidney without the University of Alabama at Birmingham's groundbreaking organ donation system that helped her and two other hard-to-match patients get kidneys in a three-way, incompatible kidney exchange earlier this year.

FDA accepts Shield Therapeutics' IND application to begin ST10 Phase 3 pivotal study for IDA treatment

Shield Therapeutics, an independent specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development of mineral-derived hospital pharmaceuticals, today announces that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its Investigational New Drug application to initiate a Phase 3 pivotal study of ST10, its novel oral iron-replacement therapy, for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease. The Company plans to initiate the Phase 3 study in the US in H1 2014 and positive data would be the cornerstone of a subsequent NDA submission.

Boys who grow up in two-parent homes less likely to have high blood pressure as adults

In a study of African-American men, researchers from the National Institutes of Health found that boys who grew up in two-parent homes were less likely to have high blood pressure as adults compared to those raised by a single parent. Reported in the Dec. 12, 2013, issue of the journal Hypertension, this is the first study of an African-American population to document an association between childhood family living arrangements and blood pressure.

New guidelines to manage heart failure in children

Heart failure in children is an important cause of childhood health problems and death. The Children's Heart Failure Study Group of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, in collaboration with the Canadian Pediatric Cardiology Association, has developed new guidelines to assist practitioners in primary care and emergency departments to recognize and successfully manage heart failure in children with undiagnosed heart disease and symptoms of possible heart failure.

HCV antiviral therapy also improves diabetes outcomes

Researchers from Taiwan reveal that antiviral therapy for hepatitis C virus improves kidney and cardiovascular outcomes for patients with diabetes. Results of the study published in Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, show that incidences of kidney disease, stroke, and heart attack were lower in patients treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin compared to HCV patients not treated with antivirals or diabetic patients not infected with the virus.
