IOF Young Investigator Awards presented to five researchers at 4th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting

IOF Young Investigator Awards are presented to 5 researchers from at IOF Regionals 4th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting

Today, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) recognized the outstanding work of five young researchers from China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Pakistan.

The IOF Young Investigator Awards, valued at 1,000 USD each, were awarded to the five highest scored abstracts submitted to the 4th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting by researchers under the age of 40. The Meeting, which closes today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, is one of the largest annual clinical bone events in the region.

The winning investigators and the topic of their research presentations are as follows:

• Liu, Dung-Huan (Chinese Taipei): The sensitivity/specificity analysis among recommendations for bone mineral density measurement in Taiwanese postmenopausal woman (OC13)
• Chen, Bin (China): Therapeutic effect of deferoxamine on iron overload induced inhibition of osteogenensis in a zebrafish model (OC15)
• Ho, Angela (Hong Kong): Second hip fracture in Hong Kong Chinese: incidence, epidemiology and mortality (OC16)
• Kok, Sim Hui (Malaysia): Can the fracture risk assessment model (FRAX) be used to assess osteoporosis among postmenopausal women in Malaysia? (OC17)
• Ahmed, Bilal (Pakistan) Efficacy of 25 (oh) vitamin d supplementation and physical activity in improving musculoskeletal health in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A multicenter randomized, controlled trial. (OC14)

In addition to the Award, the winning researchers were invited to attend an exclusive, hands-on workshop, the IOF Young Investigator Mentoring Programme. The Programme is led by world renowned experts who give important feedback to promote research excellence among promising young investigators in the field.

The 2014 IOF Young Investigator Awards for the Asia-Pacific region will be presented at the forthcoming 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting in Taipei from 14-17, 2014.
