Ampyra receives FDA approval for improving walking in MS patients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Ampyra (dalfampridine) extended release tablets to improve walking in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In clinical trials, patients treated with Ampyra had faster walking speeds than those treated with an inactive pill (placebo). This is the first drug approved for this use.

Intrinsic Bioprobes licenses diabetes biomarkers to Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics

Intrinsic Bioprobes today announced the exclusive licensing of two novel biomarkers for diabetes to Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Inc. (Raritan, NJ). The biomarkers are modified forms of blood-circulating proteins and have been linked with the presence of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The financial terms of the licensing agreement were not disclosed.

Reducing dietary salt can offer significant health benefits

Reducing salt in the American diet by as little as one-half teaspoon (or three grams) per day could prevent nearly 100,000 heart attacks and 92,000 deaths each year, according to a new study. Such benefits are on par with the benefits from reductions in smoking and could save the United States about $24 billion in healthcare costs, the researchers add.

Over 44% of internet Viagra is counterfeit

Research by UK, Swedish and American researchers shows that taking internet drugs can kill and bypassing health systems can leave life-threatening problems undiagnosed. It's estimated that 90% of counterfeit drugs are sold on the internet, 44% of internet Viagra is fake, the global sale of counterfeit drugs will reach $75 billion this year and EU seizures have risen dramatically. Counterfeit drug deaths include men who took fake erectile dysfunction drugs, pregnant women injected with fake iron for anaemia and children who took paracetamol syrup contaminated with antifreeze.

Press Ganey Associates and UNOS develop comprehensive transplant survey

Press Ganey Associates today announced it has developed a comprehensive transplant inpatient survey and an outpatient survey for use by transplant programs across the country. The surveys' questions were developed by researchers and practitioners from Press Ganey with insight from the United Network for Organ Sharing's (UNOS) Transplant Administrators Committee (TAC - which consists of elected transplant administrators representing transplant centers, members of UNOS, in the United States).
