People with tough-to-treat triple negative breast cancer, whose tumors also don't allow for double-strand DNA repair, fare better when treated with a common adjuvant breast cancer chemotherapy combination, according to results from a SWOG clinical trial.

Researchers delineate architecture of nuclear pore complex in yeast cells

Like an island nation, the nucleus of a cell has a transportation problem. Evolution has enclosed it with a double membrane, the nuclear envelope, which protects DNA but also cuts it off from the rest of the cell. Nature's solution is a massive--by molecular standards--cylindrical configuration known as the nuclear pore complex, through which imports and exports travel, connecting the bulk of the cell with its headquarters.

Researchers uncover four microRNAs as potential biomarkers for atrial fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a heart condition that causes an irregular, and often rapid, heart rate. It increases the risk of developing strokes, heart failure, and even dementia. Although it can be associated with aging, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart valve problems, etc, about one-third of patients with AF have no symptoms until they suffer a stroke.

Researchers achieve 80% reduction in liver metastasis by restricting growth of blood vessels

The International Journal of Cancer has just published the results of an experimental therapy tested on mice. The research, led by the Signaling Lab research group of the UPV/EHU's Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology of the University of Santiago de Compostela, achieved an 80% reduction in liver metastasis brought about by colon cancer.

Two partners have to find their way to each other in order to transport substances to the remote ends of special nerve fibers to maintain their function. If this partnering process is disturbed, the cells may die in the worst case, resulting in neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or spinal muscular atrophy.
