Micronics receives $244,479 cash grant under QTDP program

Micronics, Inc., a leading developer of point of care molecular diagnostics, announced today that it has been awarded a cash grant for tax year 2009 totaling approximately $244,479 under the U.S. Government's Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project program.

454 Life Sciences and DNA Electronics partner to develop high-throughput DNA sequencing system

454 Life Sciences, a Roche Company, announced today that it has entered an exclusive partnership with DNA Electronics for the development of a low-cost, high-throughput DNA sequencing system. As part of the agreement, Roche has signed a non-exclusive license for relevant IP from DNA Electronics' proprietary semiconductor technology portfolio, which enables sensitive detection of nucleotide incorporation during sequencing.

The 2010 Mid-Atlantic Bio today completed another successful conference hosting 728 registrants from 22 states and 4 countries, with more than 400 companies and 50 qualified investors participating. HDL and Virginia governor announce $4.2 million investment for expanding operations

Health Diagnostic Laboratory (HDL, Inc.) and Governor Bob McDonnell have announced an investment of $4.2 million in HDL, Inc. operations, resulting in the creation of 213 new jobs in the City of Richmond. HDL, Inc., located in the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park, will expand its clinical laboratory, diagnostics and clinical trial services, as well as its physician/patient consulting.

Roche announces U.S. introduction of cobas e 602 analyzer

Roche announced today the U.S. introduction of the cobas e 602 analyzer, the latest addition to the cobas 8000 modular analyzer series for diagnostic labs with high-volume workloads. Labs will now be able to combine this new immunoassay module with two existing clinical chemistry modules to create an integrated platform with 24 unique system configurations to match their specific testing needs.

University of Maryland to establish major research enterprise for autoimmune diseases

With a new $45 million private gift from the family of a grateful patient, the University of Maryland School of Medicine is planning to establish the nation's only major research enterprise devoted to the study of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and Type 1 diabetes. The gift, from Indiana couple Ken and Shelia Cafferty, is the largest private donation in the history of the University System of Maryland.

More effective therapeutic exercises underutilized in treatment of chronic neck pain

Duke University and University of North Carolina (UNC) researchers report in the November issue of Arthritis Care & Research that narcotics and diagnostic testing are overused in treating chronic neck pain. Their findings indicate clinicians may overlook more effective treatments for neck pain, such as therapeutic exercise. According to reviews cited in the study, evidence to support the effectiveness of therapeutic exercise in treating chronic neck pain is good, yet only 53% of subjects were prescribed such exercise.
