The investigation of a simple protein has uncovered its uniquely complicated role in the spread of the childhood cancer, osteosarcoma. It turns out the protein, called ezrin, acts like an air traffic controller, coordinating multiple functions within a cancer cell and allowing it to endure stress conditions encountered during metastasis.

Boehringer Ingelheim today announced The Lancet Oncology has published results from the LUX-Lung 8 trial. LUX-Lung 8 is the largest, prospective Phase III head-to-head trial directly comparing two EGFR-directed treatments.

New treatment option available for CLL patients in Manitoba and Saskatchewan

People in Manitoba and Saskatchewan living with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) will now be able to access a new treatment option through the prescription drug insurance plans in both provinces. Earlier this week, GAZYVA (obinutuzumab) in combination with chlorambucil chemotherapy was added to benefits formularies of the Provincial Oncology Drug Programs at CancerCare Manitoba and the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency.

Review article provides in depth survey of studies focusing on retinoblastoma protein's role in apoptosis

Retinoblastoma protein RB1, which is named after a form of pediatric tumor of the eye, is among the most common genetically regulated cellular proteins to malfunction in human cancer. RB1 was also the first tumor suppressor gene to be identified and its modes of inactivation in retinoblastoma tumors provided the basis for the ground-breaking two-hit hypothesis by the geneticist Alfred G. Knudson in the 70s, according to which cancer is due to the accumulation of multiple 'hits' or mutations in certain genes.

Working in cell cultures and mice, researchers at Johns Hopkins have found that an experimental drug called fostamatinib combined with the chemotherapy drug paclitaxel may overcome ovarian cancer cells' resistance to paclitaxel.

Study finds link between citrus fruit consumption and melanoma risk

A new analysis of two long-term studies has revealed a potential association between malignant melanoma risk and frequent consumption of grapefruit and oranges. The study found that compared with people who consumed these fruits less than twice a week, those who had them at least 1.6 times a day were at a 36% higher risk of developing melanoma.

24% rise in the number of clinical trials according to Cell Therapy Catapult annual UK analysis

The Cell Therapy Catapult has published its annual analysis of the UK preclinical and clinical research landscapes with the release of its UK Clinical and Pre-Clinical Trials Databases. These show a 24% rise in the number of clinical trials and an increase of 22% in the number of pre-clinical projects. Sector growth came in the key areas of oncology, neurology, ophthalmology and cardiovascular.

Two-thirds of patients with T4a larynx cancer not receiving total laryngectomy

Despite findings of previous studies and published guidelines, nearly two-thirds of patients with T4a larynx ("voice box") cancer are not receiving a total laryngectomy (surgical removal of the larynx), the recommended form of treatment, and as a result, have significantly worse survival rates versus those treated with a total laryngectomy, a new study published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics by experts at Penn Medicine found.

Researchers complete phase 1 clinical trial of new drug for children suffering from neuroblastoma

Researchers at Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital have completed the first clinical trial of a new treatment for children suffering from neuroblastoma. In a clinical trial led by Giselle Sholler, MD, pediatric oncologist at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital and the Neuroblastoma and Medulloblastoma Translational Research Consortium (NMTRC), DFMO, an investigational agent, showed minimal side effects with long-term survival of three patients.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology is pleased to announce the launch of its new open-access journal, Advances in Radiation Oncology, and the selection of its Founding Editor, Robert C. Miller, MD, MBA. Advances will begin accepting manuscripts by the end of the summer with studies to be published by late 2015.
