Children's risk for developing allergies and asthma is reduced when they are exposed in early infancy to a dog in the household, and now researchers have discovered a reason why.

MicroBiome Therapeutics announces completion of $1.3M bridge financing

MicroBiome TherapeuticsTM LLC, today announced completion of a $1.3 million bridge financing. It is intended to support completion of the company's two ongoing clinical studies and preparations for further clinical trials of lead product NM504, a microbiome modulator in development for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes. The bridge financing was led by current investor BVM Capital, who was joined in the round by other existing MBT investors.

FDA accepts Shield Therapeutics' IND application to begin ST10 Phase 3 pivotal study for IDA treatment

Shield Therapeutics, an independent specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development of mineral-derived hospital pharmaceuticals, today announces that the US Food and Drug Administration has accepted its Investigational New Drug application to initiate a Phase 3 pivotal study of ST10, its novel oral iron-replacement therapy, for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia in pre-dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease. The Company plans to initiate the Phase 3 study in the US in H1 2014 and positive data would be the cornerstone of a subsequent NDA submission.

Brazilian study provides evidence to support effectiveness of Tecta in erosive GERD

Takeda Pharmaceuticals International GmbH announced today results showing pantoprazole magnesium 40 mg (Tecta) was as effective as esomeprazole 40 mg for achieving complete remission (defined as combined endoscopic healing and symptomatic relief) and the mucosal healing rate was high, whilst providing significantly higher symptom relief after 8 weeks.

High cholesterol fuels growth and spread of breast Cancer

Researchers at Duke Medicine conclude that high cholesterol may make breast cancer worse when they found that a byproduct of cholesterol functions like the hormone estrogen, leading to increases in the growth and spread of breast cancer. Studies have previously shown the link between obesity and breast cancer, but the exact cause of the increased risk had not been identified.
