Biomagnetics signs LOI to acquire Lanzhou Sanhuan New Technology Development

Biomagnetics Diagnostics Corp., a developer of revolutionary diagnostic systems and technology for HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and malaria detection, and other innovative technologies, today announced the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Lanzhou Sanhuan New Technology Development Ltd. of Ganzu, China. This expected acquisition is the first of several planned acquisitions targeted at a $1.00 share price for Biomagnetics Diagnostics' common shares.

FDA accepts Protalix's taliglucerase alfa NDA, assigns PDUFA action date

Protalix BioTherapeutics, Inc., announced today that the Company's New Drug Application (NDA) for taliglucerase alfa has been accepted for review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA granted taliglucerase alfa a standard review time of ten months, assigning a Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of February 25, 2011.

New approach of screening drugs that encourage stem cells to repair damaged tissue

Professor Fiona Watt will today (12 July) give the Anne McLaren Memorial Lecture at the UK National Stem Cell Network annual science meeting and will detail a new approach to screening for drugs that target stem cells. To begin with, this is being developed for adult skin stem cells, giving hope for new drugs to promote wound healing and aid the use of stem cells to, for example, treat severe burns. This technique can also be applied to a wide range of stem cells, opening up the possibilities for harnessing stem cells in regenerative medicine.

Addition of fat to mouse stem cells push them to develop into subcutaneous or visceral fat storage cells

Vaccine manufacturers may be able to produce lower-cost HPV vaccines, say researchers

Vaccine manufacturers in India and other developing countries may be able to produce a lower-cost HPV vaccine in spite of the complicated array of patent protections on the technology, say researchers at the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. At a cost of at least $300 for the three-dose regimen, the blockbuster HPV vaccines, including Gardasil- from Merck and Cervarix- from GlaxoSmithKline, are some of the most expensive ever introduced.

Experts use Mexican aquatic salamander to study evolution and genetics of stem cells

Dr Andrew Johnson is speaking today (12 July) at the UK National Stem Cell Network annual conference. He and his team from the University of Nottingham have been using a Mexican aquatic salamander called an axolotl to study the evolution and genetics of stem cells - research that supports the development of regenerative medicine to treat the consequences of disease and injury using stem cell therapies. This team has found that there are extraordinary similarities in the development of axolotls and mammals that provide unique opportunities to study the properties of embryonic stem cells and germ cells.

UM researcher uses computer algorithms to develop vaccines for new strains of influenza viruses

Defeating the flu is challenging because the virus responsible for the disease undergoes frequent changes of its genetic code, making it difficult for scientists to manufacture effective vaccines for the seasonal flu in a timely manner. Now, a University of Miami computer scientist, Dimitris Papamichail, and a team of researchers from Stony Brook University have developed a rapid and effective approach to produce vaccines for new strains of influenza viruses.

IRIC scientists identify vitamin B3 as potential antifungal treatment

A team of scientists from the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) of the University of Montreal have identified vitamin B3 as a potential antifungal treatment. Led by IRIC Principal Investigators Martine Raymond, Alain Verreault and Pierre Thibault, in collaboration with Alaka Mullick, from the Biotechnology Research Institute of the National Research Council Canada, the study is the subject of a recent article in Nature Medicine.

BioCurex reports first set of results supporting RECAF blood test for monitoring cancer therapy

BioCurex Inc. today announced its first set of results supporting the use of the BioCurex RECAF blood test to monitor cancer therapy. The test included samples from 27 human patients with early stages of breast cancer that were tested before and after surgery. As a control, 15 samples from healthy individuals were also tested.
