Zymeworks closes $3.2 million financing round

Zymeworks Inc., a privately held biotechnology company focused on the development of next generation antibody-based therapeutics, today announced the close of a financing totaling $3.2 million. The financing consists of a follow-on round of institutional investment by CTI Life Sciences Fund, L.P. ("CTI") which led the Company's previous financing in 2009.

Signature Dx obtains worldwide license to Affymetrix microarray technology for development of CRC tests

Affymetrix, Inc. and Signature Diagnostics AG today announced that they have signed a Powered by Affymetrix™ (PbA) agreement. Under the agreement, Signature Dx obtains a worldwide license to use Affymetrix® microarray technology to develop and commercialize diagnostic and prognostic colorectal cancer (CRC) tests.

Pluristem advances toward PLX-PAD Phase IIb clinical trials for CLI and Moderate-severe Claudication

Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. today announced that following its meeting with the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), the German regulatory authority for advanced therapy products (ATP), the company is advancing toward designing two Phase IIb clinical trials for its placenta-derived cell therapy product, PLX-PAD, for the treatment of Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) and Moderate-severe Claudication.

Rare human antibodies protect mice from lethal strains of influenza

Scientists have identified a new, highly conserved molecular target on the influenza A virus and demonstrated that human antibodies against this target are protective in animal models of seasonal and highly-pathogenic avian influenza. The work was conducted by researchers at Theraclone Sciences, with collaborators at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo and Johns Hopkins University; and is reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Marine organisms may hold key to fight malaria

University of Central Florida scientist Debopam Chakrabarti is analyzing more than 2,500 samples from marine organisms collected off deep sea near Florida's coast. Some of them could hold the key to developing drugs to fight malaria, a mosquito-borne illness that kills more than 1 million people worldwide annually.

FDA approves Teva's generic Effexor XR antidepressant

Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. announced today U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Venlafaxine HCl ER Capsules, the Company's generic version of Wyeth's antidepressant Effexor XR®. Shipment is expected to commence on July 1, 2010, as per the terms of the 2006 agreement with Wyeth.

LAB Research Inc., a Canadian-based global non-clinical contract research organization, today announced it has entered into an agreement providing for an Equity Line Facility (ELF) with Dutchess Opportunity Cayman Fund Ltd., a fund managed by Dutchess Capital Management, II LLC. Under the terms of the ELF, Dutchess has committed to provide up to $10 million of capital during the next two years, at LAB Research's discretion, through the subscription of newly issued common shares.

ADVANCE study provides new insights into the management of SHPT in CKD patients

Results from the ADVANCE study presented in a late breaking clinical trial session at the ERA-EDTA 2010 Congress provide new insights into the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients. ADVANCE (A randomiseD VAscular calcificatioN study to evaluate the effects of CinacalcEt) is a randomised, controlled open label study to evaluate the effects of treatment with Mimpara (cinacalcet) plus low-dose vitamin D, compared to flexible doses of vitamin D alone, on the progression of vascular and valvular calcification in dialysis patients with SHPT.

Engineered allosteric regulation provides precise control of kinase activity in living cells

Cancer occurs when human cells move and multiply inappropriately. Within cells, a process called phosphorylation serves as an on/off switch for a number of cellular processes that can be involved in cancer, including metabolism, transcription, configuration, movement, cell death and differentiation. This process is controlled by a group of enzymes called protein kinases that - working together and separately - modify the structure of proteins, changing them and allowing them to control cellular processes.
