EC approves INVOKANA (canagliflozin) medication for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Janssen-Cilag International NV announced today that the European Commission has approved INVOKANA (canagliflozin) in the European Union for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, to improve glycaemic control[1]. Canagliflozin is an oral, once-daily medication, which belongs to a new class of medications called sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

NEXAVAR tablets receive FDA approval for treatment of patients with thyroid cancer

Bayer HealthCare and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc., an Amgen subsidiary, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a supplemental New Drug Application for the oral multi-kinase inhibitor NEXAVAR (sorafenib) tablets for the treatment of patients with locally recurrent or metastatic, progressive, differentiated thyroid carcinoma refractory to radioactive iodine treatment.

Covagen, TRL expand research collaboration to generate bispecific FynomAb

Covagen and Tanabe Research Laboratories U.S.A, Inc., a fully owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, today announced that they expanded their strategic research collaboration. MTPC and TRL have nominated a first bispecific FynomAb for formal preclinical development which triggered an undisclosed milestone payment. MTPC and TRL also exercised an option for a second bispecific FynomAb program based on the parties' research and licensing agreement signed in October 2012.

Smoking influences survival of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients

Survivors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma who are former or current smokers are more likely to have their disease progress, relapse, or spread, and are more likely to die of their disease, compared with survivors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma who have never smoked, according to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Brown was diagnosed with COPD and emphysema, the third leading cause of death in the United States, only behind heart disease and cancer. Right now, the only studied interventions that prolong life for patients with severe COPD are supplemental oxygen in people with low oxygen levels and lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) in appropriately selected individuals. Like most COPD patients, Brown was given medication but told there was no cure. He was 58 years old.

UC San Diego study suggests racial inequality leads to higher mortality in cancer patients

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine say metastatic colorectal cancer patients of African-American descent are less likely to be seen by cancer specialists or receive cancer treatments. This difference in treatment explains a large part of the 15 percent higher mortality experienced by African-American patients than non-Hispanic white patients.

However, more than 30,000 American men will die from aggressive prostate cancer this year alone. This sharp contrast between low-risk and aggressive disease presents a challenge for many researchers and physicians as they diagnose patients and also determine the prognosis of the men with the most aggressive forms of prostate cancer.
