SCCA honored as Non-Profit of the Year for providing much-needed service to community

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and its specialty gift and oncology services store, Shine, were recently recognized by the South Lake Union Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the community. SCCA was honored as Non-Profit of the Year for offering outstanding benefits and contributions to the community and for providing a much-needed service with a measureable outcome of results. Shine was recognized as Retailer of the Year for being a local South Lake Union retail store that demonstrated excellence in service, products, substantial growth, and community involvement. Additionally, the Chamber presented Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with the Excellence in Business award in the large business category. Established in 2008, the annual SLU Chamber Awards are an opportunity for the Chamber of Commerce to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and companies that have significantly contributed to both the Chamber and the South Lake Union neighborhood.

"It is an honor to receive recognition from the community, and I am extremely proud of the retail options and services we provide to our customers," said Erica Karlovits, program manager, Shine. "Receiving a cancer diagnosis is extremely difficult for families, and through our store we strive to provide help and support in a small way each day through the products and services we offer."

SCCA is dedicated to helping patients before, during and after treatment. The organization's goal is simple, to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors. The nonprofit is made up of a union of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children's, forming a world-class treatment center that provides advanced therapies and clinical trials. SCCA prides itself on translating scientific discovery into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of cancer.

Shine is a specialty gift and oncology services store in South Lake Union, owned by SCCA. A retail resource for anyone touched by cancer, Shine offers products and services to support cancer patients and their families before, during and after treatment. SCCA created the store to meet the needs of the community by offering solutions, options and hope during a challenging time. Shine offers breast prosthetics and bras, hair alternatives, certified mastectomy and compression fittings, skin care products, sexual intimacy aids, nutrition products, and complimentary head shaves. It also serves as a source for high-quality, inspired, one-of-a-kind gifts and apparel for residents and workers of the South Lake Union neighborhood. The store provides the community with a unique and vibrant shopping experience while supporting the fight against cancer.

The Shine store is located at 207 Pontius Ave. N., Suite 101, on the first floor of the SCCA House. It is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds from Shine purchases go directly to support unique patient programs at SCCA, helping patients regain their identity.
