CEOi, New York Academy to launch Global Alzheimer's Platform to reduce time, costs of clinical trials

The Global CEO Initiative (CEOi) on Alzheimer's Disease and the New York Academy of Sciences today convened representatives from industry, academia, government and nonprofits to launch the development of a Global Alzheimer's Platform (GAP), designed to reduce the time and costs of Alzheimer's clinical trials, develop an infrastructure that promotes innovation, and assure international collaboration.

Ignyta reports preliminary results from ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of RXDX-101

Ignyta, Inc., an oncology precision medicine biotechnology company, announced today that Justin Gainor, M.D., of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, presented preliminary results from the ongoing Phase 1 dose escalation portion of a Phase 1/2 clinical trial of RXDX-101, Ignyta's proprietary oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor targeting solid tumor indications, at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer 14th Annual Targeted Therapies for the Treatment of Lung Cancer Meeting.

XenoPort reports net loss of $19.1 million for fourth quarter 2013

XenoPort, Inc. announced today its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2013. Revenues for the fourth quarter were $2.9 million, compared to $0.5 million for the same period in 2012. Net loss for the fourth quarter was $19.1 million compared to net income of $3.0 million that resulted from a non-cash gain from XenoPort's litigation settlement with Glaxo Group Limited in the fourth quarter of 2012. At December 31, 2013, XenoPort had cash and cash equivalents and short-term investments of $58.7 million.

OrthoTrophix commences TPX-100 Phase 2 clinical study in knee osteoarthritis patients

People who have suspected idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis without typical patterns on high resolution computed tomography scans could in future be spared the substantial risks of lung biopsy and be given a confident diagnosis of IPF based on clinical and radiological findings alone, according to new research published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

Omeros Corporation today announced dosing of the first patient in a second Phase 2 clinical trial of OMS824, the company's phosphodiesterase 10 (PDE10) inhibitor being developed for the treatment of schizophrenia, Huntington's disease (HD) and other cognitive disorders. Investigators at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, have shown that progression of disease in memory clinic patients can be tracked efficiently with 45 minutes of neuropsychological testing. MRI measures of brain atrophy were shown to be less reliable to pick up changes in the same patients.
