Cancer may soon affect 40% of UK’s population: Report

Macmillan Cancer Support this Thursday revealed warning estimates that four in 10 people in the UK will get cancer at some point in their lives, up from one in three a decade ago. Cancer experts now believe 42% of Britons will get the disease.

Yervoy, a new melanoma drug approved in Australia

Australia has approved the world’s first drug to prolong the lives of people with advanced melanoma. The drug Yervoy received the nod from the Therapeutics Good Association (TGA) on Friday amid hopes it could add two years to the life of people with the deadliest form of skin cancer but for whom other treatments have failed.

Humira's early-line growth threatens Enbrel's future uptake in psoriatic arthritis

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms focusing on pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that while Amgen/Pfizer's Enbrel was the most widely used tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha inhibitor for recently treated psoriatic arthritis patients in the fourth quarter of 2010, Abbott's Humira has superseded Enbrel as an early-line TNF-alpha inhibitor for newly diagnosed psoriatic arthritis patients. Blood cancer drug trial results questioned by FDA

U.S. drug reviewers might limit the use of a Seattle Genetics Inc’s experimental blood cancer drug due to the narrow scope of its clinical trials. According to papers released Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it requests an advisory panel to consider the drug, under the proposed trade name Adcetris known chemically as brentuximab vedotin, for use in previously treated patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

Fibrin key to protection during gram-negative sepsis

New research from the Trudeau Institute may help to explain why anticoagulant therapies have largely failed to extend the lives of patients with sepsis. The study was led by Deyan Luo, a postdoctoral fellow in Stephen Smiley's laboratory. It shows that fibrin, a key product of the blood clotting process, is critical for host defense against Yersinia enterocolitica, a gram-negative bacterium that causes sepsis in humans and experimental mice.
