A Blood Clot is a mass of blood that forms when blood platelets, proteins, and cells stick together. When a blood clot is attached to the wall of a blood vessel, it is called a thrombus. When it moves through the bloodstream and blocks the flow of blood in another part of the body, it is called an embolus.

Nycomed submits teduglutide MAA to EMA for SBS treatment

NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. a specialty pharmaceutical company developing innovative therapeutics for rare gastrointestinal and endocrine disorders, today reported that Nycomed, a global pharmaceutical company, headquartered in Switzerland, has submitted a Marketing Authorization Application to the European Medicines Agency for clearance to market teduglutide as a once-daily subcutaneous treatment for short bowel syndrome.

Drugs for prevention of breast cancer

According to an international panel of cancer experts, women at high risk of developing breast cancer should be given preventative drugs. The experts write in the Lancet Oncology adding, drugs such as tamoxifen could reduce the chances of developing breast cancer. They suggest that this would be something similar to prescribing statins to patients at risk of heart disease. But tamoxifen has been linked with womb cancer, blood clots and stroke.

Conflicts in medical management of hemophilia

Hemophilia is a medical disorder that is part of our genetic load as humans. It will never disappear. Therefore, the only way to live with it is to receive adequate medical management. Its effects on those males who have inherited the disorder that affects their blood clotting without treatment includes recurrent hemorrhages (bleeds) into joints as well as internal bleeding. The bleeds are painful, resulting in disuse, disability and crippling. The first signs usually appear in early childhood. A child who suffers a mouth bleed can slowly lose enough blood to result in death.
