Can-Fite BioPharma opens CF101 IND for psoriasis with US FDA

Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd, a biotechnology company traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, announced today that it has opened Investigational New Drug application (IND) with the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). The IND is for Can-Fite's lead compound, CF101, for the treatment of patients with psoriasis. This is the third US IND for CF101, and the fourth for Can-Fite.

Interim data from multiple ongoing trials of XL147 PI3K inhibitor to be presented at ASCO 2010

Exelixis, Inc. today reported updated interim data from three ongoing trials of XL147 (SAR245408), a selective, orally available small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K). Activation of the PI3K pathway is a frequent event in human tumors, promoting cell proliferation, survival, and resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Hana Biosciences signs Investment Agreement with Warburg Pincus and Deerfield Management

Hana Biosciences Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on strengthening the foundation of cancer care, today announced that it has entered into an Investment Agreement with Warburg Pincus and Deerfield Management for the sale of up to $100 million in preferred stock. Warburg Pincus, the lead investor in the financing, is a new investor in Hana, and Deerfield is the company's largest existing shareholder prior to this financing.

Promising clinical data on CDX-011 in metastatic melanoma presented at ASCO Annual Meeting

Novartis' Afinitor decreases size of SEGAs associated with tuberous sclerosis

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation announced today that results from a Phase II study show Afinitor® (everolimus) tablets is the first medication in a clinical trial to decrease the size of subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs), benign brain tumors associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). In this study of 28 patients presented today at the 46th American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago, 75% of patients experienced a reduction of 30% or greater in the size of their brain tumors from baseline to six months (p<0.001).

Thesis examines infections caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum in lambs

Erik Georg Granquist's thesis examines infections caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum in lambs. This bacterium is the cause of the disease tick-borne fever in ruminants and granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans. The bacterium is transmitted by ticks and is the indirect cause of considerable animal welfare problems and financial losses in Norwegian sheep farming.

Bevacizumab extends progression-free survival in women with advanced ovarian cancer

Newly reported results from a major clinical trial show that adding bevacizumab (Avastin) to standard frontline chemotherapy for women with advanced ovarian cancer and then continuing a maintenance dose of the drug afterwards significantly extends progression-free survival. Women receiving the new treatment regimen saw no worsening of their disease for 14.1 months, compared to 10.3 months for women receiving standard therapy.

Chemotherapy delivered directly into liver blood vessels increases progression-free survival in melanoma patients

Patients undergoing treatment for melanoma that has spread to the liver may respond well to chemotherapy delivered directly into the liver's blood vessels, according to a study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and Delcath Systems Inc., and led by James F. Pingpank, M.D., associate professor of surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and surgical oncologist with UPMC Cancer Centers. The results will be disclosed in an oral presentation on June 5 in Chicago at the 46th annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

Ipilimumab extends survival of metastatic melanoma patients: Study

A therapy that multiplies the effect of a natural disease-fighting antibody has extended the lives of patients with metastatic melanoma in a large, international clinical trial. The study's researchers will report their findings simultaneously at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) annual meeting in Chicago and in the New England Journal of Medicine.

MSKCC researchers study novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma

Physician-scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center are studying a novel approach to treat metastatic melanoma, known as immunotherapy, which uses the body's own immune system to attack cancer. Presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, encouraging new data shows - for the first time - a survival benefit in metastatic melanoma patients using an immunotherapy discovered and clinically investigated by researchers at Memorial Sloan-Kettering.

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company today announced positive results from a Phase 3 randomized, double blind study of ipilimumab which demonstrated that overall survival was significantly extended in patients with previously-treated metastatic melanoma who received ipilimumab.

Positive phase III clinical trial data of NovoCure's NovoTTF device for recurrent GBM presented at ASCO

Data from the first phase III clinical trial of NovoCure's NovoTTF device for treatment of patients with recurrent glioblastoma (GBM) were presented today as a late breaking abstract during the Neuro-Oncology session at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago. Study results show that NovoTTF, a novel, non-invasive, portable medical device, may be as or more effective than the best available chemotherapies for GBM, but without the toxicity usually associated with cytotoxic or targeted treatments.

Campylobacter is one of the major causes of food poisoning, and the theme of this year's Food Safety Week is how to prevent illness caused by it. Campylobacter is a germ that occurs widely in the intestines of many warm-blooded animals and birds, particularly chickens and turkeys, and can be carried in animals that are used for food production and in domestic pets. In addition, it can occur in untreated water and raw milk.
