InfraReDx to receive $862,000 as part of MLSC Tax Incentive Program

InfraReDx, Inc., a medical device company developing intelligent cardiovascular diagnostic imaging technologies, today announced that it has been selected to receive an award of nearly $862,000 as part of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center Tax Incentive Program. In conjunction with the award, InfraReDx has committed to create 32 new jobs during 2011.

St. Luke’s second in nation to perform EVAR with Endurant AAA Stent Graft System

An 80-year-old patient at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital (St. Luke's) in Houston became the second in the nation to be treated with a newly approved FDA device for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The condition, often called, "the silent killer," is a dangerous bulge or ballooning in the main artery of the body that typically causes no symptoms until it ruptures.

GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company announced today that it has completed the tender offer by GE's wholly owned subsidiary, Crane Merger Sub, Inc., for all outstanding shares of common and preferred stock of Clarient Inc., a leading player in the fast-growing molecular diagnostics sector. Clarient provides pathologists and oncologists with access to key diagnostic tests that shed light on the complex nature of various cancers.

Researchers develop new lung imaging technique that causes minimum tissue disruption

Fast-moving objects create blurry images in photography, and the same challenge exists when scientists observe cellular interactions within tissues constantly in motion, such as the breathing lung. In a recent UCSF-led study in mice, researchers developed a method to stabilize living lung tissue for imaging without disrupting the normal function of the organ.

Incyte Corporation announced today positive top-line results from COMFORT-I, the pivotal Phase III clinical trial of INCB18424 (also known as INC424) in patients with myelofibrosis (MF) being conducted under a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) Agreement. COMFORT-I (COntrolled MyeloFibrosis Study with ORal JAK Inhibitor Treatment) is a double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase III trial involving 309 patients.

Lilly completes acquisition of Avid

Eli Lilly and Company today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held company developing novel molecular imaging compounds intended for the detection and monitoring of chronic human diseases. The transaction, first announced on November 8, 2010, has received the approval of Avid stockholders and clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. All other closing conditions have also been met.

Progress toward finding new therapies for MS is illustrated by the availability of the first oral disease-modifying therapy for MS. Progress was also made toward finding ways to restore function and improving quality of life and specific MS symptoms through exercise, meditation, rehabilitation and medications, including the first therapy specifically approved to treat a symptom of MS (Ampyra).

Researchers discover new way to prevent spread of cancer

Scientists now know that some cancer cells spread, or metastasize, throughout the body the old-fashioned way -- by using their feet. But researchers at Duke Cancer Institute have discovered a way to short-circuit their travels by preventing the development of these feet, called invadopodia. This discovery is even more important because preventing the development of these "feet" also eliminates the action of proteins present in the feet that burn through intact tissue and let cancer cells enter new cells.
