BerGenBio receives grant to study novel therapeutics for inhibiting epithelial-mesenchymal transition

BerGenBio AS, an oncology biopharmaceutical company, is pleased to announce the award of a NOK 13 million grant from the Research Council of Norway's User-driven Research based Innovation programme (BIA) to help fund research into novel therapeutics for inhibiting tumor epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a key driver of metastasis (cancer spread) and a mechanism of drug-resistance.

Researchers find that protein synthesis can be studied in adult stem cells

For the first time, researchers have shown that an essential biological process known as protein synthesis can be studied in adult stem cells - something scientists have long struggled to accomplish. The groundbreaking findings from the Children's Medical Center Research Institute at UT Southwestern (CRI) also demonstrate that the precise amount of protein produced by blood-forming stem cells is crucial to their function.

Exposure to UV light may exacerbate melanoma cells to creep outside blood vessels

Based on the pioneering work of Dr. Claire Lugassy and Dr. Raymond Barnhill at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, a new study provides additional support for a process by which melanoma cells, a deadly form of skin cancer, can spread throughout the body by creeping like tiny spiders along the outside of blood vessels without ever entering the blood stream, and that this process is exacerbated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.

Report highlights benefits of different access approach to treat uterine fibroids

Interventional radiologists have devised a new way to access a woman's fibroids-by flipping her wrist and treating via an arm not groin artery-to nonsurgically shrink noncancerous growths in the muscular wall of the uterus. Researchers found this to be less painful and traumatic for women, allowing them to immediately sit up and move after uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)-with no overnight stay, according to a March article in the Society of Interventional Radiology's flagship publication, the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
