DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. Nearly every cell in a person’s body has the same DNA. Most DNA is located in the cell nucleus (where it is called nuclear DNA), but a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria (where it is called mitochondrial DNA or mtDNA).

Meta-analysis shows that XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism may be a biomarker of glioma susceptibility

DNA damage is an important mechanism of glioma. X-ray cross-complementing group 1 (XRCC1) is a DNA repair gene that participates in the base excision repair pathway. To date, many studies have been performed to investigate the association between the XRCC1 polymorphisms and risk of cancers such as breast cancer, and gastroesophageal cancer, but the number of studies that focused on glioma is relatively small.

Researchers develop new substance that quickly and effectively kills multi-resistant bacteria

In Europe alone, more than 25,000 people die each year from infections caused by multi-resistant bacteria. Researchers from University of Copenhagen have now developed and characterized a substance that quickly and effectively kills the virulent bacteria. The substance employs a multifunctional mechanism that reduces the risk of antibiotic resistance. The findings have recently been published in the scientific journal Chemistry & Biology.

Biogen Idec Inc. today reported third quarter 2013 total revenues of $1.8 billion, an increase of 32% over the third quarter of 2012. Non-GAAP diluted EPS for the third quarter of 2013 were $2.35, an increase of 23% over the third quarter of 2012.

The highly collaborative effort involved scanning the DNA of over 74,000 volunteers-the largest genetic analysis yet conducted in Alzheimer's research-to discover new genetic risk factors linked to late-onset Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of the disorder.
