Pan-Canadian surgical study offers new hope for patients with early-stage oral cancer

Currently, about 30 per cent of patients who receive oral surgery have their cancer recur. But a new, Canada-wide surgical trial using a new approach to remove tumours and pre-cancerous cells from the mouths of those diagnosed with early-stage oral cancer offers new hope for patients.

NHLBI stops AIM-HIGH combination clinical trial in high blood cholesterol

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health has stopped a clinical trial studying a blood lipid treatment 18 months earlier than planned. The trial found that adding high dose, extended-release niacin to statin treatment in people with heart and vascular disease, did not reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and stroke.

ARCA plans to expand development program for Gencaro in atrial fibrillation

ARCA biopharma, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing genetically-targeted therapies for cardiovascular diseases, today announced that it is planning to expand the development of Gencaro, its lead cardiovascular drug candidate, to atrial fibrillation, a disease that affects more than 2.4 million patients in the United States.

Tacrolimus prevents breast cancer growth in pre-clinical studies

Tacrolimus, a drug that is commonly used to prevent organ transplantation rejection, inhibits breast cancer growth in pre-clinical studies. The finding from UNC scientists was reported in the May 26th PLoS ONE.

Abiraterone acetate effective for men with advanced prostate cancer

A drug recently approved by the Food & Drug Administration for the treatment of prostate cancer is proving to give some patients the gift of time. A new study shows abiraterone acetate extends the lives of men with the most advanced form of the disease by about four months.

Medicago, USAMRIID enter research collaboration for Ebola vaccine candidate

Medicago Inc., a biotechnology company focused on developing highly effective and competitive vaccines based on proprietary manufacturing technologies and Virus-Like Particles (VLPs), today announced that it has entered into a research collaboration agreement with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) for the development of a plant-based VLP vaccine candidate for the prevention of Ebola. Ebola is a very serious hemorrhagic fever virus for which no licensed treatment or vaccine exists.

Medications are the mainstay of treatment for epilepsy, but for a considerable number of patients - estimated to be as many as 1 million in the U.S. - drugs don't work. Derma Sciences announces results of DSC127 Phase 2 trial in diabetic foot ulcers at 24-weeks

Derma Sciences, Inc., a medical device and pharmaceutical company focused on advanced wound care, today announced that in the follow-up portion of its Phase 2 clinical trial in patients with diabetic foot ulcers, the percentage of patients treated with the therapeutic dose of DSC127 with complete healing at 24 weeks following trial enrollment was 73% in the intent-to-treat population and 85% in the per-protocol population, a difference of 27 and 33 percentage points, respectively, compared with patients treated with placebo/standard of care.
