New invention provides simple, highly effective way for patients to self-treat keloid scars

Scars - in particular keloid scars that result from overgrowth of skin tissue after injuries or surgeries - are unsightly and can even lead to disfigurement and psychological problems of affected patients. Individuals with darker pigmentation - in particular people with African, Hispanic or South-Asian genetic background - are more likely to develop this skin tissue disorder.

Death rates remain higher for African-Americans with colon cancer

African-Americans with colon cancer are half as likely as Caucasian patients to have a type of colon cancer that is linked to better outcomes. The finding may provide insight into why African-Americans are more likely to die of colon cancer than Caucasians with the same stage of disease.

Researchers identify two oncogenes that drive the development of medulloblastoma

A new collaborative study carried out by researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, UC San Diego, the German Cancer Research Center, the University of Heidelberg (Germany), and 33 other research institutions has identified two oncogenes, called GFI1 and GFI1B, that drive the development of medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children.

Huntington Memorial Hospital patient implanted with tiny, leadless cardiac pacemaker

A Huntington Memorial Hospital patient has become the first patient in the San Gabriel Valley to be implanted with a tiny, leadless cardiac pacemaker. Developed for patients with bradycardia - a heart rate that is too slow - the Nanostim device is designed to be placed directly in a patient's heart without the visible lump, scar and insulated wires (called leads) required for conventional pacemakers.
