Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) are produced from a single B cell clone and can bind to a single type of antigen binding site. MAbs are homogenous antibodies that cannot form lattices with monomeric proteins as they can bind to only a single epitope on the antigen. Developed in the 1970s, MAbs can be produced against any given substance. Thus they can be used to detect and purify any substance of interest. This has made MAbs a powerful tool of molecular biology, biochemistry, and medicine.

Omeros' OMS721 receives FDA orphan drug designation for prevention of TMAs

Omeros Corporation today announced that OMS721, the company's lead human monoclonal antibody targeting mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease-2 (MASP-2), the key regulator of the lectin pathway of the immune system, has received orphan drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for prevention of complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathies.

Health Canada approves Genzyme's Lemtrada for adults with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis

Genzyme, a Sanofi company, announced today that Health Canada has approved Lemtrada (alemtuzumab) for the management of adult patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, with active disease defined by clinical and imaging features, who have had an inadequate response to interferon beta or other disease-modifying therapies.

New drug combination therapy effective for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer

Combining the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel and carboplatin with the HER2-targeted therapy trastuzumab was identified to be an ideal postsurgery treatment option for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, regardless of tumor size and whether or not disease has spread to the lymph nodes, according to results from the BETH study presented here at the 2013 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held Dec. 10-14.

FDA advisory committee backs Takeda's vedolizumab for treatment of ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc., today announced that a joint panel of members from the Gastrointestinal Drugs and Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committees of the United States Food and Drug Administration voted to recommend approval of Takeda's vedolizumab for the treatment of adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.

Gemtuzumab with standard chemotherapy can reduce risk of relapse in pediatric patients with AML

The addition of a monoclonal antibody called gemtuzumab combined with standard chemotherapy has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of relapse and increase rates of disease-free survival in pediatric patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Janssen Research & Development, LLC today announced positive results from a pivotal Phase 2 global registration study (MCD2001) suggesting siltuximab, an investigational compound, along with best supportive care, exhibited statistically significant efficacy and a tolerable safety profile compared with placebo and BSC in treating patients with the rare disorder Multicentric Castleman's Disease who are HIV-negative and human herpes virus 8-negative.
