MD Anderson receives $2.7 million NCI grant for acupuncture study in cancer

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been awarded a grant to study whether xerostomia, a debilitating side effect caused by head and neck cancer radiation treatment, can be prevented when acupuncture is part of a patient's treatment regimen.

FDA approves Harvest's BMAC System IDE trial to treat non-reconstructable Critical Limb Ischemia

Harvest Technologies Corp. announced today that the FDA has approved the company sponsored 210-patient IDE clinical trial to be conducted at twenty-five sites in the U.S. using the company's proprietary Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate (BMAC) System to treat patients with non-reconstructable Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI).

SMR, RTU enter license agreement for RESCULA eye drops

Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Sucampo Manufacturing & Research AG, and R-Tech Ueno, Ltd., a pharmaceutical company founded in Japan in 1989, have entered into a license agreement for RESCULA eye drops, expanding Sucampo's rights beyond its previously agreed territory of the United States and Canada to all countries in Europe and the rest of the world except Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the People's Republic of China.

For a patient at high risk of cardiovascular disease, keeping up with what pills to take at different times of the day can be tedious. Window sills lined with prescription bottles - a pill for cholesterol, another for blood pressure, and an aspirin to keep blood thin and flowing - the list can get quite long and, as a result, many people, especially the elderly, often forget doses or take the wrong pill at the wrong time.

Cephalon to acquire Gemin X Pharmaceuticals

Cephalon, Inc. announced today that it has signed a definitive merger agreement under which it will acquire all of the outstanding capital stock of Gemin X Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately-held biopharmaceutical company developing first-in-class cancer therapeutics, for $225 million cash on a cash-free, debt-free basis. Gemin X stockholders could also receive up to $300 million in cash payments upon the achievement of certain regulatory and sales milestones.

Second US trial in HIV/AIDS lymphoma patients using Benitec’s ddRNAi technology

Benitec Limited (ASX:BLT), a company involved in RNA-based gene silencing for human therapeutics, announced that the City of Hope research hospital in Duarte, California is planning to initiate a second small Phase I/II study using Benitec’s DNA-directed RNA interference (ddRNAi) technology in lymphoma patients carrying the HIV virus. The aim of the study is to optimize the treatment by modifying a range of clinical parameters.
