Novartis employees to do volunteer work for non-profit groups during 15th annual Community Partnership Day

Some 200 employees of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. will again this year be helping out with cleaning, painting and various other chores and activities at 15 Montreal-area organizations as part of their 15th annual Community Partnership Day, during which they leave their offices for the day to do volunteer work for non-profit groups. It is part of a global effort by Novartis employees that involves 20,000 employees in 55 countries.

The cost of cancer care is threatening to bankrupt our healthcare system. New drugs are prolonging life, but at staggering costs. This coupled with aging baby boomers and an increasing population mean the U.S. will spend $173 billion annually on cancer care by the year 2020. This trend is not sustainable; however, there are evidence-based ways to maintain or improve the quality of care while saving money for the new therapies being discovered every day.

OVA1 more effective than CA 125 test in evaluating likelihood of ovarian cancer

A paper published in the June issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology demonstrated that adding OVA1 to a physician's preoperative assessment of a woman's ovarian mass would identify more ovarian cancers than a physician's preoperative assessment alone.

Boehringer Ingelheim's new afatinib-cetuximab phase Ib data in NSCLC presented at ASCO 2011

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. will present new phase Ib data at the 2011 American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago that indicates combining its investigational therapy afatinib with cetuximab at the maximum tested dose controlled disease in all (n=22) treated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutation positive patients with non-small cell lung cancer who developed acquired resistance to treatment with a reversible EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

NEJM publishes ZYTIGA plus prednisone Phase 3 trial data in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer

A study titled "Abiraterone and Increased Survival in Metastatic Prostate Cancer," published in the May 26 issue of NEJM, found that patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have received prior chemotherapy containing docetaxel showed a significant improvement in overall survival when treated with ZYTIGA plus prednisone compared to patients treated with prednisone plus placebo.

Neoprobe, Devicor sign gamma detection device asset purchase agreement

Neoprobe Corporation, a diversified developer of innovative oncology surgical and diagnostic products, today announced that it has signed a definitive asset purchase agreement to sell its neoprobe GDS line of gamma detection device systems to Devicor Medical Products, Inc. for $30 million in cash, plus a contingent value provision for payment to Neoprobe of up to an additional $20 million in royalties.
