All Children's Hospital joins Johns Hopkins Medicine

All Children's Hospital, in St. Petersburg, Fla., is now a part of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) and a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). All Children's is the first U.S. hospital outside of the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., region to become integrated with JHM, which includes the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

Aflac announces $1.06 million scholarship awards for cancer research

Aflac, the company that helps employers enhance benefits offerings to employees, today announced it will donate a total of $1,060,000 to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) to help defray the costs facing cancer researchers. The three-year scholarship awards focus on career development, scholar-in-training; a special program for high school students, and a task force on pediatric oncology.

Daiichi Sankyo acquires Plexxikon

Plexxikon Inc. today announced that its acquisition by Daiichi Sankyo Company, Limited, a Japan-based global pharmaceutical company, has been successfully completed. Clearance under the Hart Scott Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act has been received. Under the terms of the deal, Plexxikon shareholders will receive $805 million up-front, with near-term milestone payments associated with the approval of PLX4032 totaling an additional $130 million.

Vermillion, Quest Diagnostics enter agreement to launch OVA1 IVDMIA assay in India

Vermillion, a molecular diagnostics company, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Quest Diagnostics to make OVA1 available in India. The companies are targeting a launch in the second quarter of 2011. Additionally, at the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) regional meeting held in New Delhi April 2-3, 2011, Dr. Fred Ueland presented data demonstrating the high sensitivity for ovarian malignancy of OVA1 in combination with ultrasound.

Men who consume digoxin have 24% reduced risk of prostate cancer

Johns Hopkins scientists and their colleagues paired laboratory and epidemiologic data to find that men using the cardiac drug, digoxin, had a 24 percent lower risk for prostate cancer. The scientists say further research about the discovery may lead to use of the drug, or new ones that work the same way, to treat the cancer.
