NCCN Guidelines provide treatment information for patients with melanoma, prostate and ovarian cancer

People with melanoma, ovarian cancer, or prostate cancer now have a new resource that provides them with the same credible information their physicians use when determining treatment options. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network announces three new additions to the library of NCCN Guidelines for Patients, patient-friendly translations of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology.

J&JPRD submits New Drug Application to FDA for rivaroxaban

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development, L.L.C. announced today that it has submitted a New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for rivaroxaban, an investigational, oral, once-daily anticoagulant, for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Sanofi-aventis announces publication of positive BSI-201 phase II results for breast cancer

Sanofi-aventis and its wholly-owned subsidiary, BiPar Sciences, today announced that The New England Journal of Medicine published the final phase II data for the investigational drug iniparib demonstrating significant clinical benefit in women with metastatic triple negative breast cancer when iniparib was administered in combination with chemotherapy agents gemcitabine/carboplatin.

Physical activity associated with lower risk of death for prostate cancer patients: Study

A new study of men with prostate cancer finds that physical activity is associated with a lower risk of overall mortality and of death due to prostate cancer. The Harvard School of Public Health and University of California, San Francisco researchers also found that men who did more vigorous activity had the lowest risk of dying from the disease.

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals enters agreement with Viropro to develop biosimilar rituximab

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company with fully integrated commercial and drug development operations with a primary focus in oncology, today announced that it has signed a letter of agreement with Viropro, Inc., for the development of a biosimilar version of the monoclonal antibody drug rituximab (marketed by Genentech/Roche). Worldwide sales of rituximab in 2009 in all indications, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic lymphoma, were approximately $5.6 billion.

KINAXO, AstraZeneca enter oncology research collaboration

KINAXO Biotechnologies GmbH announced today that it has entered into a collaboration with AstraZeneca. Under the terms of the agreement, KINAXO will apply its technology platform to support one of AstraZeneca's oncology programs. KINAXO will employ high-end mass spectrometry-based technologies to quantitatively analyze posttranslational protein modifications on a proteome-wide scale.

Single cancer cell could be detected in future using new test

Soon scientists will be able to detect a single cancer cell among the billions of cells that circulate in the human bloodstream. The method could detect whether the therapy has worked or even show which therapy would work best. The test depends on circulating tumor cells (CTCs) or cancer cells that have detached from the main tumor and are traveling to other parts of the body.
