Medrobotics announces closing of $26M Series E Preferred Stock financing

Medrobotics Corp., a surgical products company with core competencies in medical robotics, announced today that it had closed its $26 Million Series E Preferred Stock financing. Existing Medrobotics shareholders and undisclosed new investors participated in the Series E raise. Proceeds will be used for regulatory preparations and submissions and for anticipated commercial launches in Europe and the United States.

Smart drugs have lasting side-effects on young people's brain

Over a million American students misuse prescription drugs or take illegal stimulants to increase their attention span, memory, and capacity to stay awake. Such "smart drugs" become more and more popular due to peer pressure, stricter academic requirements, and the tight job market. But young people who misuse them risk long-term impairments to brain function, warn Kimberly Urban at the University of Delaware and Wen-Jun Gao at Drexel University College of Medicine, USA, in a NIH-funded review published in the open-access journal Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience.

Preconditioning crush increases survival rate of motor neurons after spinal root avulsion

A previous study showed that, 1 week after avulsion of the spinal nerve root, small motor neurons (< 500 μm2) negative for 27 kDa heat shock protein (HSP27) immunoreactivity died and only large (> 500 μm2) HSP27-positive motor neurons survived in the spinal cord ventral horn.
