Although most of the world's biodiversity is below ground, surprisingly little is known about how it affects ecosystems or how it will be affected by climate change. A new study demonstrates that soil bacteria and the richness of animal species belowground play a key role in regulating a whole suite of ecosystem functions on Earth. The authors call for far more attention to this overlooked world of worms, bugs and bacteria in the soil.

Nitrogen oxides affect pollen of common ragweed plant

Pollen of the common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) has higher concentrations of allergen when the plant is exposed to NO2 exhaust gases, according to findings of scientists of Helmholtz Zentrum München. In addition, the study published in the journal 'Plant, Cell & Environment' indicates the presence of a possible new allergen in the plant.

Research suggests chlorofluorocarbons are the main culprits behind climate change

The view that human activities are likely responsible for most of the observed increase in global mean temperature ("global warming") since the mid-20th century is probably a correct reflection of current scientific thought. However, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), not carbon dioxide (CO2), are most likely to be the major driver of climate change, according to a forthcoming book authored by Professor Qing-Bin LU, a physicist in the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Warming climate trend leads to smaller reductions in cold-related deaths

A study by researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health debunks the assumption that global warming will lead to a decline in the number of deaths in winter. Findings by Professor Patrick Kinney, ScD, professor of Environmental Health Sciences and director of the School's Climate and Health Program, showed that a warming climate trend led to much smaller reductions in cold-related mortality than some experts have anticipated.
