Children with changes in bully genes have poor survival

In a genome sequencing study of 74 neuroblastoma tumors in children, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) found that patients with changes in two genes, ARID1A and ARID1B, survive only a quarter as long as patients without the changes. The discovery could eventually lead to early identification of patients with aggressive neuroblastomas who may need additional treatments.

With just one donation of a pint of blood, up to three lives can be saved. Nationally, less than 38 percent of the population is eligible to give blood. In New Jersey, according to the state Department of Health fewer than four percent of eligible residents donate regularly, resulting in the critical need for blood donations.

The authors note that hospitals need detailed data about postdischarge (PD) complications among surgical patients in order to develop "appropriate quality improvement interventions and potentially avoid reimbursement penalties." In attempt to bridge this knowledge gap, researchers from Yale and Stanford Universities evaluated procedure types, rates and risk factors for PD complications occurring within 30 days after 21 groups of inpatient general surgery procedures for more than 500,000 patients.
