Gene therapy for LCA clears another hurdle: Study

Gene therapy for a severe inherited blindness, which produced dramatic improvements last year in 12 children and young adults who received the treatment in a clinical trial, has cleared another hurdle. The same research team that conducted the human trial now reports that a study in animals has shown that a second injection of genes into the opposite, previously untreated eye is safe and effective, with no signs of interference from unwanted immune reactions following the earlier injection.

Study: Salvage targeted therapy can be suitable for elderly patients with NSCLC

Research published in the March issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology sought to determine whether differences existed in tolerance and efficacy between patients age 70 and over and younger patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) receiving salvage targeted therapy with epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) or chemotherapy.

In an announcement today, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Medisyn Technologies, Inc. said they have identified new chemical classes of preclinical compounds that may eventually lead to the first effective management of toxic amyloid aggregation and accumulation in the brain— an abnormal biological process long suspected by many researchers to be a major culprit in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

CPEX Pharmaceuticals' fourth-quarter 2009 revenues up 23%

CPEX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2009. For the quarter CPEX reported revenues of $5.2 million and a net loss of $498,000. For the year CPEX reported revenues of $18.7 million and a net loss of $3.0 million.

Actemra: 38% of rheumatologists have commenced treatment

BioTrends Research Group released topline findings from LaunchTrends®: ACTEMRA, Wave 1 today, highlighting the market uptake of the product at one month post launch. Actemra (tocilizumab), marketed by Roche-Genentech, is a new IL-6 inhibitor with monthly dosing by IV infusion. The study results are based on an on-line survey completed by 77 rheumatologists in late February.

Pfizer, Medivation announce results of two dimebon Phase 3 trials in AD patients

Pfizer Inc. and Medivation, Inc. today announced results from two Phase 3 trials of the investigational drug dimebon (latrepirdine) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the CONNECTION trial, dimebon did not meet its co-primary or secondary efficacy endpoints compared to placebo. Co-primary endpoints were measures of cognition and global function.

Spectral Diagnostics receives FDA IDE approval for Toraymyxin

BioMS Medical Corp. today reported that Spectral Diagnostics has received Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Toraymyxin(TM). Spectral Diagnostics and BioMS have entered into a services agreement whereby BioMS will assist Spectral, as required, in its commercialization of Toraymyxin(TM), a therapeutic hemoperfusion device for the treatment of severe sepsis. This approval permits Spectral to initiate its planned pivotal trial for Toraymyxin(TM) in the United States.

Newly published data shows using a Respiratory Modulation Response (RMR) is a novel, non-invasive measure to quickly and accurately detect the presence of significant coronary artery disease (sCAD).
